Sail Loft Folk Club

Sail Loft Folk Club Free Live Music Every Sunday Night! The club was originally the brainchild of local musicians Steve Atterton, Pete Belsham and Dean Hobbs.

The Sail Loft Folk Club was formed on the 23rd October 1980 when the first session was held upstairs at The White Lion in Fobbing (in an old sail makers loft, hence the club’s name). They shared a love of traditional music and would often meet at Dean’s house to rehearse various songs and tunes. That first night proved a success and the club went from strength to strength; it also went from venue

to venue too! Two years later saw the club move to The Commodore in Basildon then onto The Kings Head in Stanford. By the end of 1982 the club found a home in The Bell in Horndon before departing for The Towngate in Basildon. More venues followed; the Roundacre and the New Towngate (Basildon) and then finally to The Swan in Horndon where it has remained ever since. Steve, Pete and Dean are still there every Sunday as are other long term regulars such as Dennis Ahearn, Phil Evans, Max Blake, Dave O'Neill, Den & Nell Edwards and many more!
