Last week I had the absolute pleasure of combining both my careers. Before I took up floristry I was a nursery nurse for almost 50 years. My daughter is a primary school teacher so I went to talk to the reception children about being a florist. Children have such enthusiasm and ask amazingly interesting questions. I have a Lily rich wedding next Saturday because they’re the brides favourites so I’ve started the prepping this weekend because they can be real divas. They can take a week or so to open so I’ll be moving them around from place to place in my house to have them at their best for next Saturday. When you employ a professional florist you’re not just paying for flowers you’re also paying for knowledge and a wealth of experience. This does mean that lilies have a really long vase life but for an event you want them to look their best

Another beautiful spring bouquet left my studio this week. This time gorgeous yellow ranunculus ( like buttercups but much posher) alongside lemon spray carnations, my favourite green carnations and some beautiful irises just peeping out ready to burst into a wonderful pop of blue. All topped off with some eucalyptus nicholii , who knew there were so many amazing varieties of eucalyptus and some twisted willow

What a lovely morning with two very talented little boys making gifts for their mummys for Mothers Day. They learned all sorts of new skills. We drew pictures and laminated them, used a glue gun to stick kebab sticks on the back. They learned how to cut floral foam to fit the little buckets and how to soak it so that the flowers can have a drink. They were surprised that the foam was very light when it went into the water but very heavy when it came out. Then they arranged their flowers with very minimal input from me.

I got my very treasured Cricut machine working hard today, cutting elements for a couple of birthday cards that I’ve been asked to make. I love making birthday cards for children. I never know what they’re going to look like until they’re finished
