Welcome home to Huntly, Shaun! If you’d like to pop in and meet him or wish him well in his new role you can drop by Number 30 this Saturday (Aug 3rd) during the Huntly Farmers' Market

Yes, the rumours are true! We are delighted to confirm that Shaun McWilliam is taking on the role as Head Chef at Number 30.

Shaun has hit the ground running and we’re really looking forward to him developing the food aspect of Number 30.

To get us started let’s get to know Shaun a little better with one of our interviews.

Let’s get started. Introduce yourself and tell us about your new role at HDT?
🍽️ “Hi, I’m Shaun McWilliam. I'm originally from Huntly and I've just returned to the area after being away for a few years working in a number of reputable places. I'm glad to have taken on the role as Head Chef at Number 30.”

What’s the central focus of your role right now?
🍽️ “At the moment it’s early days! This is a first for me starting a place up from a blank canvas. At the moment I’m working with Nicola Baird getting the admin and legislation in place so that I can deliver a high quality operation and literally get bums on seats! I want to make the cafe and food at Number 30 a destination not just for Huntly but for the hospitality sector.”

Why does this matter to you?
🍽️ “I'm well focused and high-standard driven guy. I have a lot of professionalism not just for myself but for every person, business, or organisation I have been a part of.
I always want the very best for wherever I work. Being a local loon the town is important to me and I want Huntly to be able to offer more variety. I want to work with local suppliers and other food outlets in the town and have a unified approach to truly get the best for Huntly.”

What do you love about Huntly?
🍽️ “It’s where I have my roots and my family are here. I grew up here and I always wanted to come back and make a difference. It’s good to be back!”

What do you do for fun?
🍽️ “I'm a mad football fanatic a lot of people in town would probably disagree with my choice of but I'm a massive Celtic supporter. With my career I don't really make many of the games (chefs don’t get much time off at the weekend!) Apart from football I like going out for a good scran and have always done loads of walking and enjoying our countryside and scenery.”

It’s going to be buzzing in the Square this Saturday (Aug 3rd) with another HUGE Farmers’ Market!

“Huntly-built, Huntly-run, Huntly-owned”

A great article about Number 30 and how we saved this iconic building for the town and the future.

We go inside Number 30 with the local heroes who have spent years breathing new life into the town centre building.

Welcome Jo!

Welcome Jo!

Hello Huntly! It's great to be able to introduce you to someone very special. Meet Jo Macmillan - the new manager of the Huntly Travel Hub
To introduce her we have a with our five questions to get to know her.

Firstly, can you tell us about yourself and your role?
Hello, I’m Jo and I’m the new Travel Hub Manager. I’ll be looking after the E-bikes, the free local maps of local walking and cycling routes, the community minibus, and the car sharing vehicles. I'm also looking at new or expanding ways that we can support the locals and visitors to our town with all sorts of active travel.

What’s the central focus of your role right now?
Right now I’m learning more about Huntly! There are so many fantastic groups active in Huntly and the surrounding areas and they’re all doing their bit to make Huntly a great place to live, work or visit. I’ve been amazed to find there are over 120 Local groups, charities & member organisations. I’m looking forward to seeing the Travel Hub represented at local events and the doors to our premises at 11 Deveron street are already open. Pop in and say hello and pick up a map or find out more about what the Travel Hub can offer.

Why does this matter to you?
I care deeply about where I live and work and it influences my life on a daily basis. You know that saying “It takes a village to raise a child”? I believe it’s relevant to all of us regardless of our age - we all need to feel supported to thrive. Community involvement is such a great way to give back. Life is busy, I get that, but the people you choose to surround yourself with matters. They matter to you, and you matter to them. It’s a mutual exchange that makes us as individuals feel valued and the community also benefits from our support. I know the town faces significant challenges, but Huntly is lucky to have so many people working to make it a better place to work, rest and play, and it feels great to be involved.

What do you love about Huntly?
I live close by so I’m lucky enough to have had Huntly as a part of my life for over twenty years. My son had his 5th birthday party at Huntly Castle, with a real knight! As a family we’ve enjoyed many sunny (and not so sunny!) days down at the Deveron splashing about in the river. I’ve walked around the Bin with my dogs and even visited Santa in the woods. As a family we have so many memories of good times here. I love that it’s a town with a strong respect for its history but with a very modern passion to make both its people and itself thrive.

What do you do for fun?
I always try to embrace life to the full! As long as it doesn’t involve heights, or boats, or coriander! I have a theatrical background having studied Technical Theatre at drama school and worked as a stage manager in both regional theatre and for the RSC. And, although I gave up professional theatre a long time ago, I still need outlets for my creative side so I love a project or two! I’ve been the driving force behind the Santa’s Bothy Experience at the Bennachie Leisure Centre in Insch, where I used to work. I’ve created escape rooms for families to enjoy, awesome Scarecrows for local competitions, a festival in a field and I love a bit of fancy dress and making crazy videos! When I’m not doing or thinking about that lot I’m part of a book group, Insch community Choir and chair the Largie SWI.
I'm really looking forward to bringing this energy to Huntly!

The pupils took part in “A Place in Childhood”project. The posters reveal their thoughts and ideas for the future of Huntly.

They make for a very worthwhile read with some considerate thoughts as to the needs of other sections of their community.
