On Thursday January 11th Hythe had an in house demonstration from a committee member. We are so lucky that Mala Williams a NAFAS teacher and award winning designer is a member of our club.
The theme was supermarket flowers and recycled, repurposed containers.
All achievable by even inexperienced flower arrangers.
Simplest was various jam jars of different sizes . The bodies of the jars were covered in hessian and one bunch of mixed flowers used to great effect. With the addition of garden foliage ,7 jam jars looked so pretty.
Next were three tins (baked bean size). Mounted on card in a boomerang shape, although could be any shape. Papier-mache covered the tins then sprayed grey with hints of silver. Once the tins were filled with tulips, roses, statis, chrysanthemums, golden rod and greenery there was an arrangement admired by all.
Everyone has a glass vase in the cupboard but some are not always a perfect shape for arranging flowers. The answer is to use cellotape to make a grid across the top, making the process simple. A useful tip which we will all use in the future. An arrangement of Alstromeria and germinis reinforced the idea demonstrated.
A low coffee table design was made of a plastic tray covered in moss and wire grid. A lovely spring design using hyacinths, tulips, iris and daffodils with a small amount of greenery made an effective arrangement.
Using a moss covered ring previously a Christmas door decoration came next with plants and bulbs in moss using the Kokedama method. Something the club members were unfamiliar with and proved interesting.
Finally a traditional design using an urn, lots of greenery including Palm leaves, ceanothus and viburnum. Orange gerberas, yellow Alstromeria, pink roses and purple stocks made for a stunning arrangement.
A relaxing informative evening thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. Thank you Mala.
Our next meeting is on February 8th when we will hold a watch and do evening.
We meet at Hythe and Dibden Parish Hall on the second Thursday of the month (except August). 6.45 for 7.30pm and visitors are always warmly welcomed.
