Carex ‘Everest’ a hugely impressive evergreen grass that despite appearances is in fact very hardy and much more resilient than many of its peers. As it’s not overly large, it lends itself to being used in pots and containers as well as in the border. It will always do best in a well lit area but will tolerate semishade perfectly well. Really impressed over the years how well this variety does. #garden #plant #plants
A very special winter flowering shrub doing its thing as we head into a new season. The utterly adorable yellow, ribbon like flowers of Hamamelis ‘Pallida’
This is a shrub that can be on the fickle side but if you find a spot where the soil drains in the winter and still has good moisture retention in the summer then you should be rewarded with something special. The growth can take some time to kick in after planting but once a good root system is established then things should shift up a gear. Mulch with leaf mould every spring to help feed the soil and aid moisture retention when conditions become dry later in the season.
These are great, very hardy plants to grow in light shade and have the added advantage of brightening a dingy corner that needs lifting in the depths of winter.
Hamamelis are grafted and as with all grafted shrubs particularly those with a relatively slow rate of growth this is reflected in their price compared to shrubs that can be grown from seed or cuttings. There are some gorgeous cultivars available, personal favourites include ‘Diane’, ‘Orange Glow’ and ‘Harry’ If you want to read up on Hamamelis in more depth there’s an excellent book by Chris Lane on the subject and published by the @the_rhs

Having languished on my plant ‘featurettes’ I can now reveal my four legged excuse…… This isn’t the case at all and I can’t blame Rosie the sausage dog.
So in an attempt to get one last plant in there before Christmas I thought what better (maybe slightly predictable….) example than the glorious Ilex aquifolium ‘Golden King’ This is a magnificent evergreen shrub or small tree that is as versatile as Yew or Box, it tolerates being topiarised (or not) and the range of conditions that It will grow in is impressive and extremely useful, including being permanently planted in a pot or other suitable container. They look awesome either side of a gateway or front door.
The leaves are smooth and lack the prickles you find on other hollies which is a bonus when working around the foliage or maybe using some to make a wreath or table centrepiece.
Despite its name this in fact a female clone and the red berries synonymous with hollies are produced in abundance each season compared to many other hollies whose production is often confined to a biennial crop that only makes an appearance every other year. Although for the purposes of today’s clip the absence of any berries is down to Messrs Blackbird and Co. It’s a holly that can lift any dark and dingy corner or bask in the full sun of an open space and for that I love it.
Thanks so much for your kind words and regular interactions that always make my day, have a peaceful Christmas and here’s to an exciting new season ahead full of hope and yes, oodles of plants and gardening!

The awesome Aspen, packs a punch in the autumn colour department and has a charming characteristic as described in its botanical name Populus tremula, enjoy!
Leucanthemella serotina also known by the infinitely easier to remember Autumn ox-eye daisy is an injection of the softest white at a time of year when the hottest shades and tones are wreaking havoc in the most glorious fashion. This is the classic daisy flower that all of us drew as children at some point or another (and some of us still do.....) The old name for this hardy perennial was Chrysanthemum serotinum so you will find it listed and named like this in older books and online articles. Leucanthemella pairs beautifully with taller perennials especially the grasses where the contrast in shape and form can be played with to great effect. This is a tough perennial that needs reasonable quality soil, established clumps can be split and divided over time. Reaches a height of approximately 1.2-1.4 metres tall with a spread of around 40cm. A simply charming plant for mid October 🍁🍂
Sorbus ‘Olympic Flame’ stops you in your tracks at this time of year, burning fiery colours spread rapidly across the canopy. This is a relatively compact mountain ash with a beautifully fastigiate (upright form) the distinctive leaflets are a vibrant green during the summer and the blossom earlier in the year goes on to form bright red berries as autumn approaches to be swiftly gobbled up by the local bird population once they’re ready to be enjoyed. A hardy, fast growing tree asking to be used as a focal point where it’s beacon like qualities can be relished at this time of the year.
