Two days until ‘Modern Slavery and Labour Exploitation in UK Hotel Chains’

Join Dr Zahra Shirgholami to learn about how to reduce the risks of modern slavery and labour exploitation in UK hotel chains. Friday, 5 July 2 – 2.45 pm. Book now: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/modern-slavery-and-labour-exploitation-in-uk-hotel-chains-tickets-897243749207?aff=Facebook

UK's tourism and hospitality industries have high worker concentration, posing a challenge in managing risks of labour exploitation and modern slavery. Dr Zahra Shirgholami discusses these risks, including gaps in enforcement, normalisation and moralisation of exploitation, and potential threats from macro-level issues. She also highlights how these risks, with competitive labour markets, paradoxically could present new opportunities.

Our online training programme has been designed to help organisations meet the requirements of the Modern Slavery Act and EU Due Diligence laws. and examine issues of slavery and exploitation from a business perspective.

Provided free of charge, these bite-size one-hour training sessions build on the expertise of labour and human rights practitioners who have direct experience of conducting risk assessments and working alongside businesses, NGOs and trade unions to improve the living and working conditions of workers worldwide.

The inaugural lecture of Professor Thozhukat Sathyapalan, Hull York Medical School.

Addressing Obesity in the Modern Age: A Clinical Researcher's Perspective

Free tickets available from: www.ticketsource.co.uk/middleton-hall

The continuous progress in medical research and our deepening understanding of the complexities surrounding obesity inspire cautious optimism. Promising advancements in medication development, specifically targeting appetite, metabolism, and fat storage, offer hope for sustainable weight loss and improved metabolic health.

The emergence of innovative pharmaceutical interventions holds the potential to provide personalised treatments, targeting specific pathways and unravelling the intricate nature of metabolic dysregulation. These novel medications have the ability to suppress cravings, restore satiety, and reignite metabolic efficiency, fostering the potential for sustainable weight loss. However, it is essential to approach these developments with caution, acknowledging the necessity for rigorous research, comprehensive evaluations of long-term effectiveness, and careful consideration of individual patient characteristics.

The journey towards effective clinical management demands a delicate balance between optimism and scientific scrutiny. As clinical researchers, our objective is to generate robust evidence, evaluate risks and benefits, and refine our approaches to ensure the utmost safety and efficacy for individuals navigating the complexities of obesity.

In his inaugural lecture, Prof. Sathyapalan will explore the groundbreaking advancements that are poised to revolutionise the field of pharmacotherapy for obesity, empowering patients and healthcare providers with evidence-based interventions that can genuinely transform the lives of those living with obesity.
