The LUCCID Story
Due to most of our social lives being mostly recently situated in Leeds, we were constantly surrounded by lots of UK bass events left right and centre at some really gritty clubs with some intense environments such as The Warehouse, Canal Mills, Mint Club, Wire Club, Beaver Works and Mint Warehouse. This allowed us not only to enjoy the music experience watching some of our favourite UK Bass artists such as Zero, Chris Lorenzo, Distinkt, Skepsis, Holy Goof, Darkzy and Sammy Virji, but also gave us a great insight to how the bass scene operated in the night-club business. It also gave us the opportunity to watch what the artists did during performance, so we were ultimately learning and developing our knowledge in the bass scene just from attending these events.
We grew a massive liking to these artists and what they were doing when seeing them perform live, they massively inspired us to start DJing ourselves. We began investing in sample packs online, and began to produce basic tracks on Logic to get us started as producers/DJ’s. We also attended Bop DJ in Leeds frequently to learn how to DJ on various different types of equipment ranging from MIDI pads, controllers and mixers/CDJ’s.
As we were both first year students at Leeds Beckett at the time (2017), our budget had was low when initially purchasing equipment. We both put together £125 each and picked up a Serato DJ SB2, a small controller with minimal controls to learn basic mixing skills within the first year of training. Over the progression of time mixing in our spare/free hours outside of uni, we became more technically adept after watching various tutorials online as well as teaching ourselves different techniques and transitions.
During September of 2018, we upgraded our equipment and bought the Rekordbox DJ 1000 controller, as well as some Pioneer studio speakers. This was a massive jump from our original controller, it had four channels, way more special effects, lots more hot cues and a track/frequency reader in the jog wheels. This was a major step up for us as technicality and beat matching was different when listening through a pair of earphones, as well as having to multitask way more when mixing. However we got to work in learning it as much as we possibly could when we weren't studying/working to really progress our DJing skills.
