“I did toy with doing a super sunshiney lovely house mix to beat the looming winter blues, but instead I just tried to lean into the weirdness of the deep dark autumn nights :) Lots of techno, etc. featuring: broken rhythms, spacey trippy atmospheres, sub bass and drum machine workouts. Music that I feel in my whole body, stuff that makes my eyes roll back in my head and puts a grin on my face on the dancefloor. 🗣️ Q&A with Eve Lizard 🗣️

💡 What sparked your interest in digging/collecting music? Was it a person, experience, or specific moment?
I got super into dance music as a young adult, all thanks to the wonderful scene in Leeds and the countless amazingly talented DJs here playing great music :) I had a regrettable EDM phase as a kid that I wanna say sparked some sort of electronic music love… but idk. Really it was punk, emo, and indie rock that got me into digging obscure music rabbit holes as a teenager! I started going out to very student-centric parties playing mostly garage, where the crowds were often very hyper-masculine & standoffish. But just hearing that music on soundsystems was enough to give me the bug, and I started seeking out parties with more interesting music and much nicer crowds. The q***r party + underground dance scenes in Leeds are fantastic & inspiringly resilient despite a lot of struggle. I would not be DJing at all without all the lovely people I’ve met here!

“I think I have a fairly broad taste in music but find myself drawn towards tracks with elements of jazz, funk, or dub. I rarely do an all electronic mix as I flit between disco and jazz adjacent stuff a lot but this time I wanted to embrace the deeper, dubbier, electronic side of my collection. As of late I’ve been really digging Francois K’s Deep Space mix series and I think a lot of that comes through in this mix. I also love a lot of early 90s ambient which I wanted to pay homage to here.” ——

🗣️ Q&A with Rachel Jazz 🗣️

💡 What sparked your interest in digging/collecting music?

I’ve been an electric guitarist since I was 8 and built my own bass guitar at 16. It was figuring out how to work my loop pedal with all the crazy effects which really sparked my interest which was a nice segue into properly discovering electronic music when I was about 19. I used to collect CDs when I was a teenager and still have a decent collection of prog rock and jazz fusion with some hip hop, metal, and funk thrown in.

🎚️ Tell us about any parties, events, collectives or labels that have inspired you.

Where to start! I think everyone that runs parties in Leeds inspires me as the job is so tough right now so everyone who painstakingly puts on nights with love and attention to detail deserves a raise and a big hug.

Hearing 10-minute gospel tracks at or tunes like “Underwater” by Harry Thumann at gave me the confidence to embrace playing what I wanted to hear, rather than what I think I should play as a DJ (i.e. generic house music). Hearing Andrea Dama at my first .x.x was my first “what the hell am I dancing to” moment, blew my mind. Had never heard of New Beat or proto-trance, leftfield disco stuff. Still one of my favourite sets to this day. Working at Outlaws Yacht Club also exposed me to a huge variety of music, as did going to , , and

💡 What sparked your interest in digging/collecting music?

I grew up in Suffolk with enthusiastic diy band scene and a family that loved to dance in the kitchen. Moving to Leeds, clubbing and house parties opened a whole new world for me musically. A few years in (Roy Radiant) gave me a tiny USB labelled ‘Dinx’. I’d not considered DJing myself before and without him I don’t know if I would have taken that step.

Parties and collectives in the north continually inspire me , , .x.x, .heia.records, and to name a few.

recently played at in Nottingham which made me feel a genre of joy only q***r dance floors can produce.

has become one of the most popular independent radio stations in Leeds. This short documentary dives into how Tom and Owen built a DIY station that spotlights local DJs, connects creative circles, and keeps culture alive in a city that has seen far too many venues disappear.

Tom and Owen are the Leeds lovelies behind the infamous Alto Radio we all know. Their small studio space connects a huge part of the independent and DIY community, creating a home for artists who care deeply about preserving the Leeds music scene through times of rapid development and venue closures. This documentary celebrates that spirit and the people who keep it alive.

Leeds has always had a strong underground scene, and seeing Alto bring people together, support new talent, and push forward independent culture is exactly why we wanted to tell this story. We hope this film inspires you to tune in, get involved, and support people like Tom and Owen who are part of the many keeping the Leeds scene alive!

A big thank you to for all the support in the making process, and to Tom and Owen for bearing with me on the editing time for this one, had lots of fun putting this together 💜

DJ UMM (Universal Mad Man) — known to many as Lloyd or Lloydy — is a key figure in Leeds’ underground music community, celebrated for his warm presence and infectious energy at the legendary Cosmic Slop parties at Hope House. Best known as the venue’s resident security, he’s also an exceptional DJ with a deep love of funk, soul, rare groove, broken beat, soulful house, jazz, reggae, and northern soul. His mixes reflect the same openness and feel-good spirit he brings to the dancefloor.

Away from the booth, Lloyd co-runs , an independent Leeds-based radio station broadcasting globally for over four years and championing grassroots selectors and diverse sounds.

💡 Tell us how your collective started out:
Harry and Jono from the crew have been DJ pals for a wee while, as they have roots in York. They had been floating a club night idea, so brought Tash on-board - Harry lives in Leeds, and been a long admirer of her Alto Radio show! Since founding, we’ve added Joe Hell, Dee and Ga-briel plus various extended fam to the crew. All of us are connected through having expansive tastes in music, so you can expect to hear various styles of music in our sets.

🎚️ Tell us about any parties, events, collectives or labels that have inspired you:
Don’t think we can mention anything we do without Cosmic Slop. Our biggest inspirations, particularly as natives in Leeds; completely opening our eyes and ears to the beauty of music in all its wonderful forms. It’s been an honour to play at Hope House as a collective, and we continue to celebrate everything they do.

Have to shout out Alto Radio too - a brilliant hub to meet and celebrate DJs from Leeds and the local areas. Owen, Tom + Oskar do a phenomenal job of building this essential community. Without it, Harry and Tash would likely have never met each other!

Continue to be inspired by the current crop - Lick Quid Gold, GBOSA, SUBDUB, Love Muscle, Friday Feeling, low notes, more.

Other shout outs to club nights in York include Freakin and Texture - seeing DJs like Andrew Weatherall and Hunee do their thing in the city were inspirational moments.

💡 What sparked your interest in digging/collecting music? Was it a person, experience, or specific moment?

The first thing that comes to my head was my older sister showing me the Minor Science remix of Stairfoot Lane Bunker and I just couldn’t believe my ears. From there, I started going to Honest Jon’s where Andrea (Big Hands) wrote me the most comprehensive list of record labels and radios a teenager could have asked for including NTS, Balaami, Berceuse Heroique, AD93 (whities as it was known then), Ostgut Ton, Trilogy Tapes and Baroque Sunburst to name a few. So yeh shoutout to my sister, Andrea and Honest Jon’s.

🎚️ Tell us about any parties, events, collectives or labels that have inspired you.

Dusty Cabinets, Garage Noord, Cosmic Slop and Love Muscle definitely have had the most impact on my DJing. Dusty Cabs taught me to respect the soundsystem; Garage Noord about experimentism; Cosmic Slop taught me range and adaptability; and Love Muscle taught me the club has to be sexy, as that’s all anything’s really about.

Musically AD93, Modern Love, Honest Jon’s and Skull Disco which have provided continuous inspiration for a long time. But at the moment the beautiful people over at Plor are building a platform out of pure love and devotion based on community rather than a certain musical expression. Their discography is turning into something not bound by genre but by feeling. Also shoutout to the angels Daksh and Luca who I have experienced a lot of incredible music with, and I would be lying if I said I wasn’t continually inspired by you both.

🪩 Tell us about your approach to digging, where do you find your music?

It changes. I’d say at the moment I dig through my email mainly. Second spot is probably Discogs: random searching specific genres for where I feel I have gaps in my collection. Then that’s all filled out by random bits and bobs. Starting in the record shop helps as you learn quite quickly what’s hot.
