In the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, amidst the constant bombardment of information and stimuli, finding a moment of peace can sometimes be difficult. However, since starting my journey into understanding the power of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), I've come to understand the profound impact that something as simple as breathing can have on quieting the mind and fostering mental well-being.
CBT, a widely practised form of psychotherapy, operates on the principle that our thoughts, feelings, and behaviours are interconnected. By identifying and challenging negative thought patterns, individuals can reshape their cognitive processes and consequently, their emotional responses. A powerful and simple technique that is often underestimated because of its simplicity is conscious breathing.
I have been learning how by becoming conscious of my breathing and taking a few minutes to breathe deeply I can reduce the feeling of anxiety and get back to a more calm state of mind. I find that sitting in my car listening to a calming tune and concentrating on my breathing for 5 minutes can have a positive effect on my mood and productivity. There are lots of guided breathing videos on YouTube. Have a search and find one that works for you.
Give it a try... you will be amazed at how well it works. Sometimes the simplest of things can have a big impact. If you are interested my calming tunes are Barber's Adagio for Strings, Sweet Honey Wine, DR Lonnie Smith and Summer Madness, Cool and The Gang. Take time to breathe and quieten your mind.
