Because the history is important

Louise ‘Mama Lu’ Parks was one of the dancers who kept Lindy Hop alive after the closure of the Savoy Ballroom in 1958. She taught jazz dances to groups of teenagers in New York: ‘I’m a street teacher. Lindy Hop is street dancing basically, it’s not a classical work of art, it’s something you got to love to do inside your heart and want to pass on to the next generation.’

In 1982 Mama Lu Parks was featured on 'The South Bank Show'. The TV programme sparked so much interest in the Lindy Hop that Mama Lu and her Traditional Jazz Dance Company toured the UK in 1983 and 1984.

A young Ryan Francois was lucky enough to have the opportunity to learn from her, sparking a lifelong commitment to dancing and teaching authentic Lindy Hop.

This year we celebrate 40 years of the UK Lindy Hop scene. Thank you, Mama Lu!

Hang out in Milan. With Sharon Davis … looks fabulous. And you’ll eat well while you’re there.
