It’s a good job this lot of autumn sow hardy annuals and perennials are labelled, because there’s a few lookalikes going on. These are just a few of this years flowers ready and waiting to be planted out in the field in a few weeks. The last two photos are just a few trays out of the many seeds sown last week once the critical date of Valentine’s Day was reached and there was enough daylight to start seed sowing again. Amazing germination thanks , and . Back now to my endless weeding, and mulching of the beds.

Just a few brave anemones starting to pop up and one crazy rose in the polytunnel which is determined to keep flowering through the winter. Time for a bit of a radical prune to reset its time clock! 🤦🏻‍♀️

Amazing skies tonight and the campanula aren’t looking too bad either. Just letting you all know I’m still here, I’ve been having a quiet time after Christmas just pottering and keeping my plants alive. Today was good feeling the sun on my face on the 1st day of February. Thank goodness what seemed like the longest January is finally over!

Finally today was the day…. tulip planting day and I am very happy to say that the rain, frost or whatever else has been going that has stopped me getting on with this job held off and they are all in! I also planted some alliums, camassia and leucojums.
Looking back through the photos of spring I remembered just what a welcome sight the tulips are after the winter and how much I love them. Roll on spring! I Thought you would all enjoy some tulip mania too, I mean it’s a break from Wreaths 😆.

This is a special wreath that I made today to say a huge thank you to my lovely Scottish Elf helper otherwise know as and longtime friend. I am so very lucky that she helps me out at workshops and open days with the food and drinks or just when I have run out of time getting crucial jobs done. Anyone who has ever been to a workshop at the farm will know how brilliant Gisele is and how I could not manage without her! Shown here last year, helping with the tulip planting. This year tulips are still waiting to get planted because of last weeks extreme frost. Hopefully get them in at some point this week, just saying Gisele…..🤣

Last week I was very pleased to be asked to create a special and individual farewell flower arrangement for a beloved Dad who spent most of his life working as a milkman. The family borrowed a milk crate which they wanted me to incorporate and I suggested getting hold of milk bottles and putting a flower posy in each one which could be distributed amongst the family members afterwards. It was such an interesting brief which I absolutely loved doing. The mechanics involved a bit of a cats cradle to attach the moss but it all worked out. I used seasonal greenery around the crate to look like it was sat in someone’s garden. Funeral flowers can be anything and still beautiful as well as sustainable. 💚

So that’s the first succession of ranunculus now all settled into one of the polytunnel beds, I can’t wait to see them in all their beauty early next year🤞🏻. Any available space in other beds is planted up with biennials for some early spring flowers to go with the tulips and daffodils.
There’s lots of baby hardy annuals and perennials ready for pricking out into there own little pots so that they can grown on into bigger plants for planting out. Only time will tell but let’s hope they all thrive and it doesn’t get as cold 🥶 as last year!

There’s something spooky going on at HFF. Happy Halloween! Regular followers might remember these little guys 🎃 who crashed my flower beds. I knew they would come in so handy 😂. Second outing this week as the local children had a Halloween 👻 party and did ToT at the weekend. I couldn’t resist a trick, eyeballs (not real but chocolate) in red jelly! Most of them went 🤣 so lots of sticky kids, sorry Mums.

My favourite scented pelargoniums this year.
Both’s snowflake Charity Radula Last year I lost them all even though they were in the polytunnel. It was in that very cold frosty ❄️ spell where they were frozen solid for days, hoping it doesn’t get that cold this winter!! The silver lining was it gave me the opportunity to try some new varieties. Have you got your pelargoniums all tucked up somewhere frost free for the winter yet? 🍂

You may think that nothing is going on at Helsthorpe Flower Farm because I’ve been quiet but it’s been busier than ever. This time of year it’s all about sowing Hardy annuals , planting bulbs, clearing this years flowers and getting ready for next year. Lots of daffodils and narcissus planted this week. I have started to pre sprout one of my favourites the ranunculus and with them go the anenomes. I have got some really beautiful butterfly ranunculus from the fabulous and I just can’t wait to see them in the spring 😍, thanks Auntie Zoe it’s always so exciting to get new varieties . A delivery of compost to get mulching the beds has arrived not quite where I wanted it 🤦🏻‍♀️! What I thought was a final pick of the best flowers from the field before the frost but HFF seems to have escaped a heavy frost, I am sure it won’t be long! Sonfor the moment I am loving these colourful beauties.
Final photo, a treat for me to keep me warm, because it’s is definitely turning cold. Just gorgeous thick socks and gloves from ❤️.

Just had this letter in the post from MND, feeling just a little emotional and very proud. I want to say such a MASSIVE THANK YOU to everyone who came visit us for the flowers from the farm big weekend and as part of Wingrave open gardens. Just look at how much money we raised for MND! This money will help make a difference to fighting this disease and caring for those suffering with it and because of it. I know at first hand how devastating this can be so thank you so much for generosity from the bottom of my heart ❤️🙏🌸.

Flowers picked this morning ready for bunching for tomorrows market at Wing. I am going to bring a few dried arrangements too. This will be the last of the fresh flowers this year and the end of my season. There’s lots of work to do getting the beds stripped dressed and hardy annuals in to overwinter for next year. Lots of beautiful tulips and narcissus to plant for the spring too. I will be back with some dried flowers and Christmas arrangements and wreaths. I am going to be a busy 🐝 .

A sustainable floral tribute, completely compostable. It is a lovely fulfilling item to create, you hear from family about the person whose life is celebrated at the same time as mourned and try to reflect a little of them in the language of flowers. This wreath was for a lady whose husband regularly bought her roses which she loved. It is an honour and privilege to create farewell flowers and it is one of my favourite floral jobs.

Following on from yesterdays post, today we have leftover flowers and self sown squash, what’s not to love….. well maybe the squash which is really rampaging through some of the flower beds now! I think I need to make some homemade soup, these are just 3 of many, anyone got a good recipe? 🌿

Some happy self seeders that just keep coming back around the field. I like to work with nature so if they are in a reasonable location that I can work around they are definitely keepers ☺️. Nicandra physalodes, commonly known as the shoo-fly plant, the flowers are a lovely violet pop of colour at this time of year and the seed pods are great for drying to add to designs. Sunflower earth walker, for the bees and I do pick the odd one for their lovely earthy tones. Symphyotrichum novi -Belgii or Michaelmas daisy, just such a useful filler and foliage. 🌸 ♥️flowers ❤️ 🌿 🌱
