Who knew neutrons could be used to improve the texture of that cheeky chocolate bar?

If you have ever tried tempering chocolate at home, you will know it is harder than it looks. It turns out that the commercial production process is not much easier! The chocolate we see in the shops undergoes a long multi-step process to achieve that perfect snap and melt in the mouth texture.

If you didn't get a chance to join us for nuclear now, or you did join and want to explore more, their thoughts on nuclear power may be of interest

Nuclear power is the only green solution We have no time to experiment with visionary energy sources, writes James Lovelock – civilisation is in imminent danger. Published in The Independent, 24 May 2004. Sir David King, the Government’s chief scientist, was far-sighted to say that global warmin...

I am sure lots of us are turning our minds to a nice weekend. And what a weekend for the Letchworth Festival !

Clearly climate change is having lots of effects on our weather, and our biodiversity isn't what it was when I was a kid.

Watching Oliver Stone's and thinking of how you can engage in the debate could be important in addressing both issues. On the 13th June we are holding a FREE Letchworth Screening - Nuclear Now as part of the Letchworth Festival season.

I am pleased to introduce more local expertise to our panel of experts attending the film and there to answer your questions at our wonderful Broadway Cinema & Theatre

Nathan Read is the Course Director for the Nuclear Energy Masters course at the University of Cambridge. Nathan's main research interests are in nuclear safety, radiological protection, nuclear regulation, advanced reactors and the use of nuclear fission for novel applications, particularly space power and propulsion.

I often have conversations about my perception of what members of the public think about nuclear. People often say I don't know enough. This data presented today at a nuclear innovation conference shows that perceptions can change with time, and can change with access to information. I wonder if you have a view ? Attending Nuclear Now on 13th June might help.

Did you know nuclear power has a minimal carbon footprint of around 15–50 grams of CO2 per kilowatt hour (gCO2/KWh). In comparison, the average footprint of a gas-powered generator is around 450 gCO2/KWh and for coal it is around 1,050 gCO2/KWh?

Nuclear power can therefore contribute to the decarbonisation of the global energy system. Nuclear currently provides almost 30% of the world’s low-carbon electricity, making it the second largest source after hydropower.

Sannah van B***n is a doctoral candidate in the Nuclear Energy group at the Engineering Department, University of Cambridge, quite local to . She holds an MPhil in Nuclear Energy from the University of Cambridge and an MA in Science, Technology and Society from Maastricht University.

Her PhD research investigates the challenges of traditional radiation risk assessment and management in modern society. By combining knowledge and insight from sociology, health science, and engineering, she hopes to bring new perspectives on the risks that come with radiation and the use of nuclear energy technology in a wider risk society.

Previously based in the Netherlands, she worked as an energy transition consultant to Dutch industry and policymakers. She regularly moderates and hosts panel sessions, webinars, and conferences on nuclear technology and actively participates in the societal conversation on the potential of nuclear energy as a climate change mitigator.
