As well as the , today also marks .

With less light and colder temperatures, winter can be a hard time for wildlife ❄️ Songbirds are already suffering massive declines here in the UK, and providing for them in winter is the least we can do to help our feathered friends.

SongBird Survival has some tips to help our feathered friends through winter:

1. Water: Provide clean, fresh water all day. Be careful of placement so that it’s away from potential predators, and keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn’t freeze over. Even a small dish on a windowsill can help a thirsty bird this winter.

2. Food: Put high-energy or high-fat food out at the same time and place each day so that birds don’t have to waste energy searching.

3. Shelter: Create spaces for shelter and protection from predators.

Happy ✨ After weeks of dwindling daylight, we are held at a magical tipping point with the shortest day and the longest night of the year. A time of both reflection and celebration, it signals the sun’s ‘rebirth’ and the returning of the light ✨

🎵 Snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow, in the bleak midwinter, long ago 🎶 - In the Bleak Midwinter

Rachel of Catkin Flowers and her team transformed the Great Hall with the magic of midwinter for ‘A Christmas Chorus’. Snowdrifts blanket the furniture with bare branches adorned with bracken and dried materials including clematis, honesty and sweet chestnut leaves 🍂 Handmade paper snowflakes, bracken garlands and birch trees bring the winter landscape in and around ❄️

Celebrating Yule, the festival of midwinter, as well as Christmas is a way of introducing a slower, gentler, more reflective festival, one more in tune with nature 🌿

If the idea of marking the seasons appeals to you or you want to share in a seasonal celebration then take a look at Rachel’s ‘Wheel of the Year’ workshops, which mark nature’s seasonal shifts.

The midwinter scene was designed and installed by Rachel Petheram of Catkin Flowers and her team: Michelle Kelsey, Guy Petheram Garden Design, & Jane Bowtell.

Get crafty this Christmas and create your very own nature-inspired star 🌟 This fun and festive project is the perfect family activity to do together while adding a touch of seasonal magic to your home ✨

Here’s what you’ll need:
🪵 Five sticks (all about the same thickness & length)
✂️ Scissors or secateurs
🧶 Twine (string & wool work well too)

Steps:
1. Cut or snap the sticks to your desired length - the longer the sticks, the bigger your star will be.
2. Arrange the sticks into a star shape.
3. Tie the points together tightly with a double knot.
4. Secure the star by tying the sticks in the middle with more string.
5. Add foraged foliage and natural materials to decorate.
6. Hang your beautiful creation on the tree or around your home to spread festive cheer 🎄

Please note: When foraging for materials with children, always ensure they are supervised. Remember to wash your hands thoroughly afterwards. Only pick items if you have permission and avoid collecting anything you are unsure about to ensure safety and respect for nature.

📣 Only one week left to visit ‘A Christmas Chorus’ at Doddington!

🎵 May your days be merry and bright and may all your Christmases be white 🎶

Nadya and Lou of Lumo Workshop, artist Millie Welburn-Cowell and our incredible volunteers created rows of fluttering snowflake bunting, white paper chains and large snowflakes to transform the Staircase into a 'White Christmas'.

These unique paper decorations bring to life the spirit of a homemade Christmas. The scene is complete with giant presents and flocked trees to represent not just the beauty of the season but also the excitement of presents waiting under the tree and the joy that fills this special time of year ❄️

Just one of the magical displays to discover as you explore three floors of the Elizabethan Hall for ‘A Christmas Chorus’.

Winter Solstice Workshop • Last few spaces remaining!

Join Caroline Brown, founder of BEA Wellness and Beauty, in celebrating the Winter Solstice with a meaningful ritual – a cherished tradition she has practiced for over a decade.

The Winter Solstice, occurring on 21 December, marks the longest night and the shortest day of the year. It is a time steeped in tradition and significance, symbolising the rebirth of the sun and the gradual return of light ✨

To celebrate the occasion, you are invited to participate in a warming and welcoming ritual, followed by a guided meditation. Caroline will share the theory behind energy and chakras, including lessons on how essential oils benefit the nervous system. You’ll also have the opportunity to write a letter of reflection to yourself, allowing you to release the old year and manifest your new dreams for the future.

Mulled wine and festive treats are included plus you’ll receive solstice gifts to continue your journey at home.

Inspired by the beauty of the rural images depicted in the late seventeenth century Flemish tapestries adorning the walls, James from House of Props transformed this room using recycled wood and natural materials. The scene evokes a sense of peace and tranquility, capturing the essence of the beloved Christmas carol 'Silent Night' ✨
