As we come to the end of Celebrant Week I want to ask you a question - are you wedding tired? Are you tired and a little bored of attending weddings that are just the same, formal with no personal touches? I can do a ceremony that is completely unique to you - to you as individuals, as a couple, your promises, hopes and desires, and to your love story. If you want religion and traditional I can do that too. If you want a unity ceremony such as a sand ceremony or lighting of a candle, we can talk about that. Written your own vows? Perfect!

I am here to write and deliver a unique ceremony that you have always dreamed of. The only limit is your imagination.

Let’s talk a little bit about death.

My mum was diagnosed with auto immune liver disease when we were about 8. She was very poorly and we nearly lost her a few times. Death was talked about with frankness and it was just an accepted conversation.

When dad died in 2018 we knew what his general wishes were when it came to his funeral. The one thing we hadn’t really discussed was where he wanted his ashes scattered. How about Blackpool Rugby Club, a place and it’s people very special to his heart. Twickenham? We wanted him closer. In the end mum settled for a small but beautiful woodland area in our local Crem. We knew then that mum wanted to be scattered with him.

Sean our fantastic Funeral Director said a few words and there was only me, my partner, sister and brother there. That’s how we wanted it and I didn’t really know any different.

Did you know you can hire a celebrant to do a scattering or internment of ashes for you? They don’t have to have led the funeral service (if you had one). I can write a unique service from scratch or use elements of the service you had. We can include poems and music. People can share their memories and thoughts. It can be wherever you like. You may need to ask the landowners permission if you choose to go that way but it can be up a mountain, at sea, in the sky, by a river or loch.

When it comes to scattering my ashes I’m not sure exactly where I want to settle. Definitely the Lake District which was once my home. Up Hevellyn 950m up? Do I send my loved ones on a walk over Striding Edge to get there? Part of me feels a bit naughty doing that! Maybe though Coniston. It’s simply beautiful there.

So have that conversation with your nearest and dearest. Do you want to be cremated or buried? Where do you want your ashes scattered and by who? Make your final send off one to remember and totally ‘you’. ❤️❤️

A year ago today we lost our mum, 2 years after dad died. When the funeral director visited us after dads sudden death he put us in touch with Jean the celebrant.

I remember answering the door and she walked in gave me a big hug and then into the lounge to greet my mum, twin sister and partner in the same way.

We talked, laughed and cried as we retold stories and told her all about dad. We showed her photos and then off she went to write the tribute. She went on to do a cracking job at the funeral and had just got dad.

I thought at the time what a very special job. Then mum passed away last year and Jean entered our lives again. We were in a lockdown so we didn’t get to see her in person but she did another wonderful job. It ignited a passion inside me. I needed to know more about it. So I researched training providers, I asked friends and family what they thought and decided to go for it. Nearly 12 months later I had qualified with Civil Ceremonies and taken the first steps to setting up my small business.

There is of course great sadness but without those experiences with Jean I wouldn’t be where I am now.

I will dedicate my time to creating unique funerals and celebrations of life that will truly reflect your wishes. I will honour the person that has died with a tribute as unique as they once were.
