Opening night: Thursday 29th August, 6pm-10pm. All welcome

Josie Jenkins and Daniel Halsall are both based at Arena Studios in the Baltic Triangle area of Liverpool. With adjacent studio spaces, the artists often work alongside each other, sharing music and conversation, including moments of feedback about the paintings they are working on.

With subject matter and styles varying, the linking of these two artists, through an exhibition of new work, leaves any real theme or concept to the imagination. The individual paintings speak for themselves against a backdrop of two artist friends who share a great respect for one another’s creations.

Jenkins will exhibit mainly large scale paintings of interior and landscape settings. With glimmers of wonder and nostalgia running through the work, there is also metaphorical meaning to be found in the imagery.

Halsall will be exhibiting a series of works exploring figuration, along with playful artistic jams on canvas and paper.

▫️🟦 Arena Studio: Artist Introductions 🟦▫️

Daniel Halsall is a painter who creates modern minimalist figurative paintings that draw on Modern day themes such as technology, glyphs, computer data, along with his interest in classic painters such as Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Jean Michel Basquiat, Leonardo Da Vinci, and Mark Rothko.

Halsall was born in Billinge 1981, his father was a local art teacher who encourage him to draw from a young age, and helped develop his all round skills from the age of 7 to 15.

In the last 15 years he has worked with Gondwana Records founded by Daniels brother Matthew, collaborating on artwork with acts such as Matthew Halsall, GoGo Penguin, Mammal Hands, Svaneborg Kardyb, Jasmine Myra and Phil France to name a few.

Daniel has been at Arena for a year and a half, and was drawn to being involved with the studio after seeing that it was full of painters.

It has been a great experience and has fuelled lots of ideas and creativity whilst being with such a strong mix of creative’s.

🎆 ARENA STUDIO : Artist Introduction 🎆

“Hi, I’m Credo. I am an artist based up in the Northwest. After studying Fine Art BA at Liverpool John Moores University, I continued my practice very loosely. However, since the beginning of 2022, I have been dedicated to painting and print making. My work shows my truth and lived experiences. Through my work, I intend to provoke empowering discussions and challenge the assumed narratives which surround people who have been through trauma. I aim to joyously confront these assumptions. My practice is greatly inspired by feminist artists, zines, album art, posters, and graffiti. Recognising that my art seeps into all aspects of my life, I actively celebrate the aesthetic influence that this media has on my work. Putting emphasis on making my work look cool or fashionable, has meant its reach goes further, with the hopes this inspires more openness and normalises the conversation around painful traumas.”

🌿 ARTIST INTRODUCTIONS 🌿

Ruth Piper is an artist who paints colourful and vivid landscapes to capture the emotive experiences of her travels. Currently she is using oil on canvas to create landscapes influenced by the 1930’s railway posters and screen prints of holiday resorts. She is fascinated by landscapes because of the shapes they produce and adores how bright colours bring them to life.

Ruth completed her Art Foundation course in 1975 at the Wallasey School of Art. In 2005 she completed her bachelor degree in Fine Art at LJMU, and shortly thereafter joined Arena Studios. She joined the studio because “it didn’t matter what sort of art you did. I enjoy the eclectic variety of artists working there and the friendly, welcoming atmosphere.”

Since 2008 Ruth has had solo exhibitions in Liverpool and the Wirral with joint exhibitions in Cologne and Ormskirk. She has also been selected four times for the Williamson Gallery Spring Open exhibition which promotes local artists in Merseyside.

🌈 ARENA STUDIOS :ARTIST INTRODUCTIONS 🌈

My current work has developed since completing my BA at Liverpool Hope and MLitt Print at Glasgow School of Art. I still am working in the realm of abstraction and colour but no longer with a focus on maps; I now currently take inspiration from dreams, emotions and connections between the mind and body. In a way I still am looking at maps, but maps of the mind. I have been expressing these ideas through painting (digital and nondigital), drawing (digital and nondigital), monoprinting and writing.

My writing is very important in my current work; I write what I call my dream stories which are based on remembering dreams from the night before or sometimes when something such as smell, sight or sound recalls them. I also write about my specific thoughts and emotions. My current work has been digital and nondigital abstract paintings, which have been heavily inspired by my recollection of dreams, feeling and my writings. I attempt to channel these feelings and express them using gestural marks and creating wounds of layered paint. Colour is still very important to my work as I think it emphasises the emotions behind the work as well as creating a visually satisfying and balanced piece of work.
