Looking forward to a great weekend

𝘉𝘺 Siberian Husky Club of Great Britain (SHCGB)

In 1983, Penny and John Evans were asked to help make a film about sled dogs for the BBC children’s programme, Blue Peter, in Aviemore. It was while in the Scottish Highlands, they conceived the idea of a sled dog race and the first Siberian Husky Club of GB Aviemore race was held in 1984 around Loch an Eilein.

The rally soon moved to Glenmore and, from an initial 12 teams, it rapidly grew in numbers, reaching its highest entry in 2005 at 235. For many years, the Aviemore event was the largest dryland race in the world and attracted significant crowds of spectators. Organising such a large event is a huge task and over its 40 year history, numerous people have been involved in making the Aviemore weekend happen. There are too many to name everyone involved but some of the key people include: Penny Evans, John Evans, Alan Bowering, the first Team Aviemore of Sarah Robinson, Paul Keen, Guy Redwood and Steve Taylor; Kenny and Lindsey Sutherland, Keith Givens, Mark and Tracey Squires, Hugh and Judy Wakker, Pete and Kaz Jones and Pete Wright. Team Aviemore really is a big team.

The Aviemore race is run on Forestry and Land Scotland trails through Glenmore Forest. Over the last few years, the FLS new Land Management Plan for the area has introduced new environmental restrictions, making the race very challenging to put on. Unfortunately, we are no longer able to overcome these restrictions and it is with great sadness that we have to announce the 2024 Aviemore race will be the last. The Siberian Husky Club of GB Aviemore race has been an iconic event and made memories for hundreds of Club members over the years. Not many sled dog races across the world have run for 40 years so, as a Club, we must be proud of this great achievement. It is with great sadness that we now bow out but appropriate that our last race should be the 40th anniversary and we guarantee you, it will be a great event and a real celebration for us all.

Well what a show, around 217,000 people flocked to the show over the four days and over 140,000 watched the show on RHS TV.
I spent the show at the immensley popular Forestry Arena where the action is pretty much non-stop all day with various attractions which thrill the audience.

We had 4 chainsaw cavers, Iain from Chainsaw Creations, James Elliott Chainsaw Sculpture, Sam Bowsher Chainsaw Carving and Pete Bowsher.
Our stunt bike guys were ScottWilson54 and Joe Sproat
The large forestry equipment was supplied and demonstrated by Ponsse UK and many thanks also to the suppliers of the other arena equipment, including ILH Groundcare Machinery, P J Gaul and Fuelwood

I also need to mention my friends at NSR Communications LTD, without their sound system then non-one would have heard my commentary on the various displays and competitions, including the Scottish Championship 80ft Pole Climb at The Royal Highland Show sponsored by Scottish Woodlands and the Scottish Axe Throwing Championships, well done to all the competitors.

Big thanks to the dedicated army behind the scenes who have been planning the show over the last year and work tirelessly the week of the show, including Graeme and Alyson, Michael and his guys, and also Chris along with Andy and the team from Houghall College

The end of March saw the final race of the Sled Dog Association of Scotland 2022/2023 race season at a new venue where a technically interesting trail was set up to keep folks on their toes! Once again The Butty Box were onsite to keep us all fed and put on an excellent spread for the Mad Hatters Tipsy Tea Party which followed the AGM, oh and some excellent costumes once again 😀

It's been a busy start to the year and last weekend saw us back down across the border at a new venue for Sled Dog Association of Scotland , The Byerley Stud. Lovely foot friendly trails with technical sections to keep things interesting! The week before the race it rained every day and led to a change of trail on the Sunday to remove some muddier bits!
Being a Borders race, Jackie from Horses for Courses Photography was onsite both days as was The Butty Box who kept us all fed and will also be joining us again at Brechin.
No racing this weekend but I'll be taking the truck to a car show organised by Klean ‘N’ Classy tomorrow then heading to Brechin Castle next weekend for the final race of the season.

Another winter weekend spent in a forest at the amazing foot friendly and technical trails of Ford and Etal Estate while, of course, being surrounded by sled dogs. I was there doing the timing for one of the Sled Dog Association of Scotland series of championship races. This one was extra busy with a bigger entry and 3 races ran over the weekend instead of the normal 2. The extra stage was run on the Saturday night and I provided floodlighting for the start and finish as well as creating a light tunnel in the forest and also provided background music for handlers to listen to while waiting looking at the results screen and waiting for teams to come through the finish line.
Being a Borders area race, local Jackie Burrell from Horses for Courses Photography was there taking action pictures out on the trail and The Butty Box provided catering over the weekend.
