- The Dahlia is named after the 18th century botanist Anders Dahl. He called Dahlia's vegetables at first, because the tubers are edible and said to taste like potatoes and radishes.
- It is the National Flower of Mexico as it was first discovered there in 1615.
- in the 19th Century, a newspaper offered a Β£1 reward for the first cultivator who produced a blue Dahlia. It has never been claimed.
- Peak blooming season is from mid summer to late Autumn.
- Flower heads can grow up to 1ft in diameter.
- The Dahlia is from the Asteraceae family.
- The RHS holds an annual Dahlia show in the UK.
- One of the most famous unsolved murders has been named the 'Black Dahlia' case.
- The myth of the Dahlia comes from the Aztecs, who believed that it helped the Earth Goddess give birth to her son. After taking care of this flower for a whole night, the Earth Goddess was blessed with a boy who later became a powerful deity in Aztec mythology.

This Weeks Flower Of The Week with Freya is the versatile Carnation.

- The carnation is one of the oldest flowers to be cultivated, dating back 2000 years.
- The Greeks and the Romans used them for decoration and in ceremonies.
- Some carnations are known to have a spicy, clove like scent.
- The carnation is the birth flower of January.
- Carnations symbolise love and good fortune.
- They have an anti inflammatory and antiseptic effect.
- The petals of a carnation can be used as a natural dye.
- The Latin name is Dianthus Caryophyllus.
- The name 'Dianthus' was coined by the Greek botanist Theophrastus. It comes from the Greek 'dios' for divine and 'anthos' for flower.
- It is mainly found in the Mediterranean countries.
- In the Netherlands, white carnations are associated with Prince Berhard as he wore one during WWII and the Dutch people copied this. Now, it's a sign of the Prince, Veterans and the Resistance.
- One legend, the goddess of hunting, Artemis, gouged out a shepherd's eyes after she blamed him for scaring away her hunting animals. When she realised she was wrong, red carnations bloomed from the shepherd's tears.

- They are bisexual flowers meaning that they are able to self pollinate.
- The Gladioli is the birth flower of August.
- It is associated with the fortieth wedding anniversary.
- 'Gladiolus' was the word spelled by Frank Neuhauser, that helped him win the first ever National Spelling Bee in 1925.
- The Gladioli was the signature flower of Dame Edna Everage and she called them 'Gladdies'.
- There are 300 species of the Gladioli.

These beauties were delivered in for a wedding this week - how gorgeous are they?

Isn't nature incredible though? As you can see, there is one rogue peach in amongst the lemon 🌹 We always ensure that we order more than we think we will need for this reason - to ensure that we always have enough to work with 🌹🌸

Garden roses are a bit more expensive - but we think they are definitely worth it for that wow factor in your Bridal bouquet!

Our Flower of The Week with Freya this week is the unusual Chincherinchee.

- The genus is Ornithogalum.
- The name Chincherinchee comes from the Afrikaans name for the species 'tjienkerientjee' which refers to the sound the stalks make when they rub together.
- They are also known as the 'wonder flower' or the 'Star of Bethlehem'.
- They have a vase life of up to 14 days.
- They are endemic to the Cape Province of South Africa,
- The leaves are smooth and soft textured.
- The plant was first named by the Dutch born botanist Nikolaus Joseph von Jacquin in 1776, shortly after the plant was introduced into Dutch gardens.
- In folklore, the biblical star of Bethlehem is said to have fallen to Earth and shattered into pieces, which then became the ubiquitous white flowers.

This weeks's Flower Of The Week By Freya is the charming Ranunculus 🌸

- Ranunculus comes from the Latin meaning 'Little Frog', this refers to it's preference of a moist habitat, just like a frog.
- The Ranunculus symbolises true love in Victorian flower language.
- They tend to have a vase life of 7 days or more.
- The Ranunculus in fact belongs to the buttercup family, and the genus is ranunculaceae.
- There are around 17,000 species of the Ranunculus.
- The surface of the petals are so smooth, it creates a mirror like surface reflecting it's other petals. This is why people do the 'Do you like butter?' test with the Ranunculus family member, the buttercup.
- The reflection of these petals helps attract pollinators.
- The Ranunculus was used to treat fevers in traditional medicines.

In Persia, there is a tale of a young Prince that fell in love with a nymph. He visited constantly, and sang to her night and day. The other nymphs grew tired of his pining and turned him into a Ranunculus flower!

Today, we would like to show our appreciation for all of our doggy mates - We have Oscar, and Oscar, Bobby, Izzy, Benji and Rosie (We're missing a snap of our little Terry - She's usually too busy scrambling on the floor for a cuddle) There are also many more that we just haven't been able to pin down!

These little dudes know where the good treats are πŸ˜† And, to be honest when we get to stop for a minute to make sure they know they are good boys and good girls - it most definitely boosts the serotonin levels πŸ₯°
