Sarita Baxter, our Head of Learning & Development, and regional trainer Sandra Rogers attended the Dementia Summit in London earlier this week. Hosted by the King’s Fund, this one-day conference brought together health and social care professionals who routinely work with people living with dementia, and their families. Delegates were provided with the latest information about dementia and how to best support the care of someone living with the condition.

“The whole day heightened awareness and helped people to join together in the fight against a disease that is becoming more and more common,” says Sarita. “It was very useful to meet others working within the sector, to share best practice and find out what works for them. We were also able to acquire some of the summit’s videos for use within our own new dementia training package, which is called ‘My World of Dementia’. This training is so powerful because it uses first-person experience with dementia and gives staff an insight into how confusing, frustrating and intimidating everyday care tasks can be for someone with dementia.”

Breaking News: The first drug to slow Alzheimer's is too expensive for the NHS

In trials, Lecanemab was shown to slow cognitive decline by about a quarter in patients in the early stages of Alzheimer's over the course of 18 months. But in draft guidance, it has been said that there is a significant cost to the drug, with Alzheimer's Research UK stating "it was a bittersweet moment".
