All good things must come to an end—today is the last day of the Grubstreet Cellars’ Into The Woods festive theme. With its pinecones, moss, glowing lights, and decorative baubles, this woodland-inspired space was the perfect party spot. We’ve loved bringing a touch of tradition to this cosy corner of the venue.

On this day in 1962, Queen Elizabeth II and the Queen Mother were welcomed to the brewery, following in the footsteps of King George III’s famous visit 175 years earlier 👑

The Queen didn’t just tour—she became part of the brewing legacy by starting a mash herself, which was later bottled as The Queen’s Ale in commemorative six-packs. The royal pair enjoyed a private screening of Whitbread’s Badminton Horse Trials of 1962 in the company cinema before exploring the Porter Tun Room.

The day ended with a grand display of the Whitbread horses and drays—a scene later captured by the artist Terence Cuneo.

As we mark Remembrance Day, we reflect on our venue's remarkable story of survival through two World Wars.

During WWI, the brewery faced unprecedented challenges as the nation focused on the war effort. Production fell dramatically in the war years, with output dropping by nearly a quarter of pre-war levels. The Defence of the Realm Act of 1914 further impacted operations, restricting brewing to just five and a half hours daily. Many workers answered the call to serve their country, with women stepping into roles previously considered unsuitable for them, maintaining production despite material shortages and increased taxation.

WWII brought new threats; however, the brewery was well-prepared. In 1938, demonstrating remarkable foresight, a steel lookout cabin was installed atop the 150-foot malt tower specifically for air-raid watching. This early warning system proved crucial during the dark days of the Blitz, allowing staff to spot and respond to incoming threats quickly.

Despite these precautions, on 29th December 1940, incendiary bombs fell on Chiswell Street during the Blitz. The brave members of the Chiswell Street Fire Brigade fought to save the Porter Tun Room. While parts of the Whitbread complex suffered damage – including the central cooperage, shops and hop store – the heart of the brewery endured.

Today, under the arch as you enter the courtyard, we have a memorial tablet commemorating the brave men from the brewery who gave their lives in both World Wars.

As Bill Knight, the former production director, once noted: "This old lady of Chiswell Street survived two World Wars, several riots and civil disturbances, and five major fires."

Content Warning: Dark History 🚨

This Halloween, we want to share a chilling tale from The Brewery's past. Behind the elegant façade of 52 Chiswell Street lies a darker chapter in Whitbread's history. Once the world’s largest brewery, these historic walls witnessed three mysterious deaths:

In 1815, Samuel Whitbread II, tormented by the brewery’s troubles, was believed to have taken his own life by cutting his throat “from ear to ear.”

In 1834, John Martineau, the man who had saved the brewery from collapse through a crucial merger, was found dead in a yeast vat in the fermentation room. The jury’s cryptic verdict? “Died by the visitation of God.”

Then in 1866, William Ward, a brewery worker, was found lifeless at the bottom of a 27-foot vat filled with lethal carbonic acid gas. His name was scrawled in chalk on the beam above, leaving a haunting question: what drew him to the gas, and was there something darker awaiting him in the depths?

We’re not saying the venue is haunted, but if you hear strange noises after dark, perhaps it’s best not to investigate...

Did someone say bubbles?

Those tiny bubbles you see dancing in your glass—there are approximately 49 million of them in a single bottle of champagne! Each one carries aromatic flavours that contribute to the complex taste we know and love.

But beware - champagne packs a powerful punch! Regular wine bottles would explode under its pressure, and when opened, the cork can zoom out at an impressive 64 km/h!

Whether you’re toasting to success or adding sparkle to your event, this timeless elixir never fails to impress.

Happy 🥂
