I do love the smell of a Vaghar in the morning - tastes like Mung Dal
Vaghar is the art of infusing the flavour from all the spices into the food.
Chhoti Holi.
We are celebrating Holi this weekend, the festival of colour.
It's a riot of fun where people throw coloured powder and water at each other - although perhaps not this year!
So why the fire?
After sunset today, people gather around a pyre, perform puja (prayers) and then light it. The cleansing power of the fire purifies and purges inner evil.
The festival is of good triumphing evil and is celebrated over two days, today is Chhoti Holi (Little Holi). Tomorrow is Holi.
Holi is the marker of the end of winter in India and the arrival spring, coinciding with the arrival of British summer time!
With it comes fresh beginnings, a cleansed mind and heart ready to embrace they joys of spring and to play.
Tomorrow, on a normal year the throwing of colour begins.
