Thanks to everyone for supporting my son Maurice and the Magdalen Choral Evensong gig. It transpires that Mo led the responses - the solo parts - which is basically pretty very actually cool. Most importantly, he enjoyed it. Herewith the link.

Live from the Chapel of Magdalen College, Oxford.

That lad Maurice Cole is singing with this lot tonight if anyone is at a loose end in Pimlico tonight. It will be, to quote The Housemartins, quite good.

THE GREAT NORTH WOOD

So, yay. Welcome y’all to the Great North Wood.
Grown anciently on London Clay, it stretches
from Selhurst in the south to Deptford
up by Old Man Thames; from Streatham in the west
to eastward facing Beckenham. Mortal
bricks and mortar have displaced the sylvan
furlongs of years gone by. But I, and all
the sprites, will still make mischief where we can.
Surprises are best. Sometimes as a fox
we will appear, a cat, or parakeet;
nosing in the alleys, looking in the nooks;
at nights, in days; in wakefulness and sleep.
Know, ye denizens, that where’er you rove
you’ll not be lonely in these shadowed groves.

Alert for Geeks@fablesGNW . . . 'Fables from the Great North Wood' is structured like one of the Medieval English Mystery Plays as depicted in the engraving pic attached. The original Mysteries, some of the oldest forms of English drama, were performed on the streets of towns such as York and Coventry with actors who were carpenters, boatbuilders, stone masons (etc) in real life. Performance came as a Pageant: think Notting Hill Festival meets Lord Mayor's Show. Anyway, the day of performance was declared a holiday and the Holy Day in question was the Feast of Corpus Christi. The date moves every year in tandem with Easter Sunday . . . yet by pure chance the first performance of 'Fables from the Great North Wood' at Brockley Brewery as part of the Brockley Max festival today - 3 June 2021 - is the Feast of Corpus Christi. That.
