It is important to get a sense of how different generations of the Caribbean community has evolved through the challenges and opportunities of life in the UK. This Survey is our first step on that journey.

We know that with busy lifestyles not everyone had the chance to take part. There will be further opportunities to share your views with us coming up.

A huge note of thanks to everyone that completed the 100 Caribbean Voices Survey; you are truly appreciated. We will be reviewing each submission and will compile a report to be shared with you as soon as possible.

Thank you again for being such an important part of our community.

Another way the Caribbean community has enriched life in the UK

Another way the Caribbean community has enriched life in the UK

*Caribbean Influence in the UK* On Saturday, the West Indies cricket team, the famous 'Windies'; lost to Scotland in the World Cup Qualifier.
How did Scotand's cricket become so good? A Jamaican trained them! It's another way that the community has made a massive contribution in GB (even if it worked against us on Saturday).
The man responsible was club cricket legend Irvin Iffla, who was born in Kingston, Jamaica. He initially played for the Jamaican Cricket team, before moving to Scotland on a contract that required him to both play and train.

His trainees spoke highly of his character and skill, his encouragement, and the transformative effect he had on the Scottish game. 'He changed everything, frankly;" said Raymond Bond, a wicketkeeper. "He transformed the whole club and the whole of Scottsish cricket. He was a magician with the ball and brilliant with the bat, and people came flocking to Williamfield to see him every Saturday he was playing".

Iffla passed in 2012 aged 88, and is buried in Stirling, Scotland, where he was the second ever person to recieve the Freedom of the City. So, it was a loss on Saturday for the Windies, but a win for the community and Iffla's fantastic sporting legacy.

This is the 1970s UK Caribbean front room on display in the Museum of the home in London.
This reminds us of so many things growing up. Although at times they seemed deeply unfashionable to our young eyes, It is noticeable how our mothers and grandmothers were extremely talented in their creation of crochet doilies and chair backs, and crochet lace edges on handkerchiefs and tablecloths. This room looks as though it's warm and welcoming, has some great tunes on in the background and smells of really good food!

Great reads from Caribbean writers.
In the years since the late Andrea Levy’s novel "Small Island" received widespread recognition and won the Orange Prize for Fiction back in 2004, Caribbean book and novel writers have achieved considerable success in the UK. They have garnered critical acclaim, won prestigious literary awards, and gained a widespread UK readership.

Have you checked out Caryl Phillips, whose works like "Crossing the River" and "A Distant Shore" have been highly regarded.
Or, Trinidadian-born author V.S. Naipaul, "A House for Mr Biswas" and "The Enigma of Arrival."
More recently, Marlon James, a Jamaican author, won the prestigious Man Booker Prize in 2015 for his novel "A Brief History of Seven Killings."
Trinidadian Cambridge and Edinburgh graduate Brianne McIvor’s “The God of good looks” comes out this week, too. There’s so many choices, so check out some Caribbean vibes in your summer reading.

Don't miss this tonight! AN AWARD-winning film about the life of a Trinidadian World War II RAF pilot, who went on to help African leaders to gain independence from their colonial masters in the 1960s, is to be shown on BBC Two tonight. He even tricked RAF officers into believing he was an African Prince so they would make his bed for him 😂

In all this heat, it's hard to imagine arctic winds and frozen seas, but this is exactly what holding Barbadian Philip Als is heading into in the coming weeks. Not content with being part of the first Barbadian duo to row across the Atlantic, Phil is part of a British team heading north to be the first in the world to row the notorious across the Arctic region. We're wishing him luck on his latest expedition, which shows the world some more Caribbean excellence 👌🏿🙌🏾 See the full story on our blog https://eventconnoisseurs.com/2023/06/philip-als-setting-sail-for-uncharted-waters-and-inspiring-barbados/
