On Wednesday 14 August, Dub Me Always is proud to present a pre-Carnival sound system special with the return of the mighty Jah Observer, alongside host DJ David Katz, plus at 8pm a book launch for the revised & expanded edition of Solid Foundation: An Oral History of Reggae, published by White Rabbit Books!

A legendary figure in British sound system history, Austin ‘Spiderman’ Palmer’s stack of exclusive dub plates made Jah Observer one of the premier London sound systems during the 1970s and 80s, and his regular presence at the Notting Hill Carnival has always been greatly anticipated. Currently based in Jamaica, we are extremely fortunate to have Austin grace us with his presence once more at Dub Me Always, as his pedigree selection and good vibes on the mic always generate something special. With a range of roots reggae favourites and a stack of one-off mixes from Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, King Tubby, Mikey Dread and so many others, you are guaranteed an exceptional night for your dancing feet and listening pleasure. Which original ’70s dub plates will Austin pull out of the bag this time? There’s only one way to find out!

Solid Foundation is the definitive history of Jamaica’s holy music: reggae in all its forms, from the earliest ska and rock steady pioneers to the dancehall and reggae revival stars of the twenty-first century. Woven together into an engrossing narrative, this is an extensive history charting the progression and development of the music, with all the glorious highlights and the controversies and feuds in-between. First published in 2003 and including interviews with over 250 of the genre’s key artists, Solid Foundation has been revised and updated with abundant new material and in introduction by acclaimed novelist Jacqueline Crooks, reissued as part of White Rabbit’s Deep Cuts series. Come at 8pm sharp to get your copy, signed by the author!

Last time Jah Observer played, we were beyond capacity with many patrons denied entry, so make sure to come early to avoid disappointment. Do not miss this historic occasion!

Making regular trips to Jamaica back then and with widespread connections throughout the reggae underground, Coxon Jnr established personal friendships with esteemed artists such as Dennis Brown and Delroy Wilson, granting him access to exclusive material, which he has made regular use of in the decades the followed.
What will Coxon Jnr pull out his dub plate bag on the night? There’s only one way to find out! Expect favourites from the roots reggae era and dub plates galore, delivered with care. Come early to avoid disappointment - do not miss this historic occassion!
