One of the most original Italian actresses, Iaia Forte, gives voice in a male role to the the nightclub singer Tony Pagoda portrayed by Academy Award winner director Paolo Sorrentino (THE GREAT BEAUTY, THE YOUNG POPE) in his debut novel EVERYBODY'S RIGHT
In this theatre adaptation of an episode of Paolo Sorrentino’s novel Hanno Tutti Ragione, Tony Pagoda, a “larger than life” Neapolitan singer, is in New York, waiting to give the most important concert in his career: he will perform for Frank Sinatra at Radio City Music Hall. The play is conceived as a concert, where the singer’s emotions are triggered by his excitement at performing for his hero, living legend The Voice, in a major pop music venue. In a sort of sensorial hallucination caused by alcohol and co***ne, Pagoda sings and at the same time experiences glimmers of memory, enlightenments, love anguish, caustic remarks set off by the song’s notes, where the accompanying music converses with the words, as in a musical score.
After the extraordinary international success of The Great Beauty, award-winning Italian actress Iaia Forte works with Sorrentino again, this time in the role of a man. “The idea of adapting the character of Tony for the stage – she says – was born out of love. I gave two staged readings of the novel and enjoyed embodying this character and enacting the beautiful words of the book so much that I wanted to convert it into a play. This singer, a co***ne addict, desperate and vital, is a character so beyond gender stereotypes that can easily be performed by a woman. I like to think that Pagoda’s bragging sneer hides a feminine soul, a naivety, a desire for a lost harmony. But then again, the theatre is the place where, luckily, we can ban naturalism and expand the boundaries of our fantasy.
