Heyyyyy! I’m Emma and I don’t care about algorithms and being cool but I do care about building and being part of communities and remembering that our creativity and imagination are what make us, well, us.

I don’t care about literariness and arbitrarily constructed capitalist and racist boundaries in literature but I do care about realness, words that punch the gut & soothe the soul and emotional connection.

I couldn’t care less about typos and ‘incorrect’ spelling (in fact I love them more than ever because they prove that imagination-thief AI hasn’t been used in their construction) but I do care about feeling good, curating self-belief and having fun when we think and write and speak and make art.

I don’t care about offending white supremacists (even though sometimes they scream in your face, spit and harass) but I do care about showing up for Palestine and all oppressed people. Not because “it could be me” but because humanity matters, individuals matter, people’s pain matters and we are all connected. The air we breathe knows, I can taste it in the air - can you?

I don’t care about doing motherhood the way society expects but I do care about nurturing socially aware, loving kids with gumption, all the moods and cackling laughs.

I don’t care about saving love solely for romantic relationships but I do care about forging new, short-term, old and long-term loving connections alongside kindhearted people with oomph and fire.

Much love,
Emma ✊

Loved receiving this message from our raffle prize recipient of Professor Refaat Alareer’s ‘If I Must Die’ posthumous poetry & prose collection. He should’ve been alive to publish it himself, however he was purposely targeted and devastatingly martyred by the IOF on 6th December 2023.

Thank you to Fatema of - a progressive publishing company of dissident and more-needed-than-ever voices - who persevered with sending the collection to the lovely
Let us know how Professor Alareer’s lyrical tapestry of words lands with you, Elena 🫶

Thanks again to Elena for participating and being part of our collective donation to Children Not Numbers, supporting our friends and global comrades across the sea in Palestine 🇵🇸

A stunning performance of A Streetcar Named Desire.

Reminded me of all the students I’ve studied it with (miss you!) and how important it is to see plays come alive on stage rather than study them to analytical bloody death on the page.

Patsy Ferran was the best Blanche I’ve seen. Paul weren’t half bad either 😉

There are so many books that should be compulsory from schoolhood - and this one’s top of that pile: all about love by bell hooks.

On this Valentine’s Day there’s no other words I’d rather be reading. bell hooks writes of love as an effortful, community-shaped, purposeful life intention - challenging capitalist society’s patriarchal obsession with commercialisation, commodification and cynicism about love.

“[In writing this book]I heard testimony that lovelessness had become the order of the day…Turning away we risk moving into a wilderness of spirit so intense we may never find our way home again.

…Love is an action, a participatory emotion, a risk…Genuine love is the foundation of our engagement with ourselves, with family, with friends, with partners, with everyone we choose to love.

…The rich cannot get enough [money]; they cannot find contentment. Yet everyone wants to emulate the rich…The worshipping of money leads to a hardening of the heart. And it can lead any of us to condone, either actively or passively, the exploitation and dehumanisation of ourselves and others.

…I write of love to bear witness both to the danger in this movement, and to call for a return to love…choose love.”
(bell hooks)

In 2014 she co-signed a statement in solidarity with the Palestinian people of Gaza. Because loving people recognise and amplify love they witness in others.

Donation made to on Christmas Eve: the day after what should have been the birthdays of the souls of our souls, both Abu Diaa Khaled Nabhan and his beloved granddaughter Reem, and the day before the birthday of Jesus is honoured, a Palestinian.

All donations have been given to Children Not Numbers, once commission was given to our payment platforms.

All prizes were donated or funded by us personally. Not for any centering of ourselves but because transparency is vital and all donations should go to those who really need it. And all people in Palestine need it - and from organisations on the ground.

For Mohammed Abdul Hadi, a small part of whose experience is shown on slides 8 and 9 with Dr Ala, one of Children Not Number’s medics on the ground in Gaza.

Every time I see a child of Palestine I think, our baby. They are all our babies. The adults are all our adults.

Thank you so much to everyone who donated, supported and shared. And for everyone speaking up about genocide, turning up for Palestine and Sudan and DRC and Lebanon and Syria and Yemen in whatever way you can.

We will not stop. Free all oppressed people. Free Palestine.
