These words from Shaban Ahmed, Hafiz, software engineer from the Gaza Strip, Palestine, adored son and brother, are never far from my mind:

Integrate Palestine into your daily routine.

Don’t let it become a distant memory.

Even amidst your everyday life - work, meals, laughter, family - make Palestine a part of your conversations and actions.

Achieving justice requires continuous effort and patience.

Keep advocating, sharing, boycotting, and pressuring governments.

Every action matters.

The key is to persist and never relent.

Hey perigee-syzygy! This is the last of this year’s supermoons (when the centre of the moon is less than 360,000km from the centre of the earth), also called a perigee-syzygy of the earth-sun-moon system. How beautiful is that.

🦫 Known as the Beaver Moon, it will appear in UK skies on the evening of Friday November 15th and will reach its peak at around 9.25pm - though we know clouds may do their obscuring thing. A supermoon can appear up to 14% larger and 30% brighter (info from space & Lia Leendertz’s Almanac).

🌚 No-one fully knows why it’s called the Beaver Moon but it’s thought to have been named by the indigenous people of Turtle Island (or ‘America’ as it was renamed by its colonisers), to align with the catching of beavers to ensure fur for the winter. Or some say it’s because this is the time beavers build their dams. Either way, we need to reclaim the word beaver 😉

🌑 This perigee-syzygy of our three celestial bodies earth, sun & moon is also known as the Darkest Depths Moon or Mourning Moon in Celtic tradition.

💫 Beaver Moon will appear in the sky next to the Pleiades star cluster, also known as the Seven Sisters, located just beside the moon in the Ta**us constellation, though the supermoon may outshine them so they’ll be harder to see.

I’m no astronomer but I’ll be looking up to the supermoon we all share and thinking of all those whose nights are truly dark and need our love and action more than ever
🇵🇸 🇱🇧 🇸🇩 🇨🇩 🇾🇪 🇸🇾

p.s. the next supermoon won’t be until October 2025

Having energy to go into London more frequently is great. Endo/adeno flare up got me good (well, bad) this month.

Thought I’d try out a sample sale after seeing these things mentioned by Aja Barber and crew on her Patreon. Got me a chunky denim jacket from Mother of Pearl for quarter of the price ✌️ 10 year old Sweater Shop me swooning.

Also sample sales might just contain some of the most shovey women of humanity, jeeeez.

I don’t know right now, I can’t breathe without thinking of Palestine and the global inhumanity. Yeah this is focusing on the academic to find solace but also the more I learn about seasons and cycles, the more connected the world feels.

So here ya go if you want to know more about today’s Martinmasness…

Also known as Martin the Merciful and Martin of Tours, St Martin was a 4th century bishop born in Hungary.

He is know for his radical generosity when, having seemingly nothing to offer someone in poverty begging him for help, he cut his cloak in two to share.

🍗 Martinmas became an opportunity to give thanks, show generosity and to celebrate - hundreds of years before Puritans ‘created’ Thanksgiving in North America btw. After the harvest was gathered, roast goose was shared and all meats salted or dried to prepare for a typically harsh winter.

🕯️ In honour of St Martin, this time of year is known for its feasting but also for sharing food and resources with others, for lighting bonfires and candles to show appreciation for the natural world and bring light into the winter darkness.

And here’s a cheery ancestral ditty to welcome in winter…
🌬️
If the wind is in the south-west at Martinmas, it keeps there (as in, it’ll stay mild) until after Candlemas (2nd February)
If it brings a north wind,
there’s a hard winter to come (yay).

~

See Slide 2 for the North Wind confirmation and also, great website name.

🌱 Remembering seasonal cycles makes a difference to how I live and work, and more than anything it helps to connect us all because we are all dependent on the land and our earth’s rotations towards each other.

Even tiny movements of radical generosity would change a lot of things.

To not end where you thought you did
not with skin but water
not with arms but meadow
of watercress, dropwort, floating pennywort
against all odds to be buoyant.
To feel there is an upward force
greater than the weight of the heart

When you hop on a Live like the universe called us all in!

I cannot recommend the work of Tricia Hersey (The Nap Ministry) enough in the first place obviously but her Live yesterday was about the non-response of people right now to creating momentum about her book event, even though paid. Even though reminded.

It came from a place of genuine bafflement, there was no anger, asking her community for their own experiences and thoughts. The comments were fu***ng amazing honestly.

Post-pandemic unaddressed trauma coupled with capitalistic intensity from our work whatever it might be = overwhelm and as Hersey put it, “feeling cooked”.

Listening to someone play with ideas and mull them over, turn them over out loud in real time with a genuine openness and curiosity just doesn’t happen enough.

Yeah I’m honoured TH picked out my comment but I recorded it to see if this calls to anyone else.

“lastminute interest is real, like preparing and planning aren’t possible right now”

On a small biz level, people not signing up for/buying things is real. Creating our own hibernaculae (where animals overwinter) in an overpriced & underpaid living crisis is real. Us all working hard is real. Feeling on the back foot is real.

It is not for lack of effort, purpose or belief on your part. So I wanted to send goodwill and reassurance because these things need to be brought into the open and not reduced to ‘you’re not trying hard enough’. I see you, I feel you!

Also Hersey’s book looks damn beautiful 💜 She says she wants people to turn it round, play with it, dip in, dip out. The page she’s revealed so far says “If the enslaved could believe, I know I can” (Nikki Giovanni)

It’s out in December in the UK and pre-orders help authors a tonne and a Bunhead bakery bun, hun, so I’ve popped our Bookshop link in our bio. All commission goes to charity.

Much love and solidarity,
Emma x

Sheesh Jordan you get us in the soul core every time!

📖 His book ‘Avoidance, Drugs, Heartbreak and Dogs’ is a must read - it’s in our bio to nab through our Bookshop.org.
We always give 100% of our commission to charity - our dear friend’s charity African Village School Fund, and to , Bisan Owda’s suggestion to support the precious people of Palestine.

🙏 Thanks so much for a fab experience. Going to see people I admire is the best gift ever (Jordan *and* Lizzie I mean there). Had to slip in a throwback to meeting the awesome Jordan IRL

Thinking loads about control since Jordan’s sharing, how it’s there without me realising it. Surrender also. And defo love as capitalism in our society: transactional, often extractive. If this sounds interesting I’d read ‘Radical Intimacy’ by Sophie K Rosa too, more about friendship and community than romantic relationships really.

Today’s Joy: 10th August 2023

A playlist starting with Yebba
Thanks to Liv Little’s luscious sprinkling
of Rosewater.
I’ve entitled this magic, ‘Beautiful Voices’,
And now I’m being ebbed into new sounds,
Skipping those that don’t hit
And swaying to those that defibrillate the soul.
Picking blackberries
Totally anathema to growing up with Findus crispy pancakes
Food from the actual plant whatttt -
Little me would be red faced
But this time in a good way,
Smushed and smeared with blackberry joy
(Red on the inside, just as we all are)
Grinning and picking with my golden girl
As we harvest joy from the earth,
With love and thanks and wanting to hug the thorns and the bees.
Laying under tree leave mazes
In a field that feels like 1988
My mind absorbing the sky
Even through the laments of young vocal chords,
wanting to rush home.
And I see the guilt of making them wait
And I say, thanks imposed guilt, but this experience is essential
For all of us.
Lick your ice lollies, ya rascals
Mama needs some still life
And I can find it,
even in the busy molecules skittering around me, inside me.
I found it. I felt it.
Dust dancing in the sun, that’s me.
Feeling the thorns but worth it,
for the taste of blackberries.
Bracing less for impact,
And more for joy

Such an awesome time last Friday co-working IRL with Katty and Vanessa

I love Katty’s Friday morning co-working Finish to Flourish sessions online - they’ll be up and running again in September and I can’t wait 🥳

Loved The Standard as well but loved ticking off my Asana task list more.

And getting to see Vanessa twice in one week - errrr more please! 🧡

Self-employment and wfh can be lonely and these women-friendly communities built by wholehearted leaders are nectar for us all. Essential and luxe all at the same time. Thanks, Katty x
