๐Ÿ“ฃ Volunteer shoutout! ๐Ÿ“ฃ

Our brilliant music volunteer, Maria Meyers, represented rb&hArts last week at the HLCC staff forum.

Maria spoke about our partnership with Live Music Now and discussed the impact of music on patient wellbeing in hospitals. ๐ŸŽต

Here is a small clip of Maria's conversation with Luke Blair and a video made by Joe O'Hagen from our Communications team.

Thank you for helping to champion our work, to Luke for facilitating such an important conversation, and to Joe for this fabulous compilation video ๐Ÿ“ฝ๏ธ

๐ŸŒŸ Rosie appreciation post ๐ŸŒŸ

Last week we said a very sad goodbye to the wonderful Rosie Watters, our Participatory Arts Manager and Singing for Breathing instructor. Rosie has been a integral part of our team at rb&hArts for 7 years and is now moving up to York to start a very exciting masters course! ๐ŸŽต We said goodbye in classic rb&hArts style with an evening of watercolour painting, karaoke, and lots of pizza ๐Ÿ•

We are so sad to see her go but so excited for her to be embarking on this new journey! Thank you Rosie for all the brilliant work you've done with us at rb&hArts - you will be greatly missed ๐Ÿ’™

Recently, our exhibition โ€˜You Have Transformed Meโ€™ was the backdrop for a very special event at Royal Brompton Hospital: the launch of the Pioneers project, celebrating some of the visionary scientists, reformers, and carers who shaped Royal Brompton Hospital.

The event included talks from Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub, pioneer of cardiothoracic surgery who spent much of his career at Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals; Dr. Richard Grocott-Mason, the Chief Executive of the Heart & Lung Critical Care directorate (HLCC); and Rasleen Kahai, Rotation Dietician at Royal Brompton Hospital.

Guests included Professor Sir Malcolm Green, the former Royal Brompton respiratory physician who set up the British Lung Foundation, who was presented with an antique tin of โ€˜Brompton Hospital Lozengesโ€™ by Luke Blair, Head of Comms for the HLCC.

We are excited to announce that Melissa Hartley has been chosen as the artist for the Royal Brompton Canteen Commission.

Melissa Hartley is an abstract painter and muralist based in London. Specialising in geometric abstraction, she explores the interplay between space, shape, colour, and light, ultimately creating experiences that evoke balance and joy through her artwork.

Melissa will be incorporating ideas from art workshops taking place on 17th and 18th July into a final art mural in the restaurant.

Undeterred by the rain, we were out exploring the history of Chelsea and getting some fresh air on our Wellbeing Walk with Katarina Heldring-Morris during Creativity and Wellbeing Week. We were joined by patients, staff, and Chelsea locals (armed with umbrellas) and learnt lots of interesting facts about Chelsea and the Royal Brompton Hospital.

Ziad is a charismatic musician from Lebanon who came to England in 1985. He plays Oud, Arabic violin, keyboards and is also a vocalist. As a blind musician his UK musical journey started in 2012 when he joined the Inner Vision Orchestra and then the Para orchestra in 2013. Ziad performed at the closing ceremony of the Paralympics and in Qatar. In his free time Ziad loves to practice and recording his music, particularly the Lebanese songs he used to sing in his childhood.

It is always precious to hear from patients: 'I was having a really bad day, really being sick, extra injections feeling horrible and Ziad your wonderful singing and oud playing has turned my day around. Thank you so much!'

We are so grateful for this!
Thanks , .

Thanks for facilitating this!

Next week will be an extra special session as part of Creativity & Wellbeing Week, where we will invite patients, staff and visitors to decorate their own square for a collaborative blanket representing things that make us smile ๐Ÿ˜Š

Thank you so much to Kostas Glynos for visiting the wards and playing the Kanun. Both patients and staff were delighted to hear perform.

โ€œHow amazing to see and hear a Kanun. I am a musician and I have never heard this instrument and even more amazing a concert for me in my room!โ€

โ€œI had no idea any hospitals had musicians coming round to play for patients. What a wonderful thing to do - it has certainly made us feel so relaxed listening to the music after all the doctor checks and visits earlier!โ€

Come and join us on our wellbeing walk! ๐Ÿž๏ธ https://buff.ly/3URc0X9

Meet us at the Sydney Street reception at 11am as we enjoy a stroll in the sunshine through the surrounding areas. Led by Katarina Heldring-Morris, a member of staff at Royal Brompton, we will explore some of the historic buildings in the local area as well as the notable figures who lived in them. There will be the opportunity to sit down on a bench midway through the walk so you can go at your own pace.

The walk will be concluding around 11:45 back at the reception after which we encourage you to sit with our Crafternoon project where we are making a blanket tapestry of what wellbeing means to you.
