Spotlight on our summer programme

This summer, the Hason Raja Centre (HRC) became a hub for a variety of community-wide activities, focusing on the health and well-being of girls and young women. Vallance Community Sports Association (VCSA), the primary tenants of HRC, continued their impactful programme, which serves the elderly, disabled, minority communities, and youth groups. SHA are proud to have supported these initiatives. Spotlight on our summer programme Additionally, this year, we hosted events in collaboration with local charities, organisations supporting street children in Bangladesh, and the East End Women’s Museum, with all held at the HRC. For more details about VCSA’s programme, visit: www.vallancecsa.org.uk

Hason Raja Centre is located in the Whitechapel/ Bethnal Green area. If you would like to hire the centre, or hold a community event, get in touch with SHA by emailing [email protected]

Local community gardens from Bethnal Green generously donated packs of wildflower seeds to the Hason Raja Centre, perfect for our outdoor planting boxes. We cleared the planters of litter and replaced the topsoil with high-quality compost. In addition to the wildflower seeds, we added some permanent plants and ensured they received plenty of water.

Hason Raja Centre hosted a screening of ‘Mighty Afrin: in the Time of Floods’ on Saturday. The film chronicles the life of a young woman facing vulnerabilities and her journey towards stability and enduring friendship. Attendees were captivated by the stunning cinematography, particularly the portrayal of the monsoon season and river travel in South Asia.

Additionally prints of illustrations and images painted by the street children were available to purchase.

Forhad, representing the Dhaka-based charity LEEDO, provided online updates to visitors, alongside speeches from Amy Neilson Smith and Miss Kent Natasha Sharmin, who recently visited the street children in Dhaka. A delightful surprise awaited attendees outside the Hason Raja Centre with a magically appearing rickshaw!

Huge thanks to Angelos Rallis who gave permission for the film screening - and well done on a brilliant film!

About Mighty Afrin (2023), by Angelos Rallis [1h 32m]:
In one of Bangladesh's low-lying coastal areas along the Brahmaputra River, a 12-year-old orphan named Afrin lives on a flood-ravaged island with no electricity. Her relatives want to marry her off which is illegal though common practice but Afrin is not like other girls, she has plans and a mind of her own. When her home is inundated by floods, she decides to leave behind the only world she's ever known and embark on a perilous solo boating journey to find the father she's never met, in one of the most densely populated cities in the world. In Dhaka, a city brimming with danger and mystery, Afrin faces the impossible, but befriends a group of fellow orphans and never gives up hope of reuniting with her father and living a better life.

The East End Women's Museum teamed up with the Modern Cockney Festival, two emerging initiatives in our community. The art market, set up in a 'pop-up' style, featured a diverse range of items for sale, including homemade cards, handcrafted clothing, books, jewellery, and rare archival materials. We look forward to continuing such initiatives in the future.

Huge thank you to our volunteers for their help.

The East End Women's Museum organised a screening of "The Cockney Sikh," a film by local filmmaker Farihah Chowdhury, followed by a Q&A session with both the filmmaker and the main subject, Suresh Singh. During the session, visitors posed questions about the film's inspiration and the obstacles encountered by modern filmmakers. This event was part of the Modern Cockney Festival, showcasing diverse cultural expressions and discussions in our community.

After a day filled with cultural activities at the Hason Raja Centre, we hosted our inaugural open Iftar over the weekend at the same venue, welcoming visitors from various parts of London. The delicious food was provided by a nearby eatery based in Bethnal Green. Ramadan is a period of introspection and unity for the local faith communities in East London, and we were delighted to celebrate this occasion with individuals from diverse faith backgrounds and those who identify with no particular faith.
