SFC Coronavirus action

Following the recent advice from the Government to avoid public spaces as much as possible, we have made the decision to suspend fencing until at least the end of term. We will re-evaluate our position regarding the summer term based on how the situation develops in the coming weeks and will keep you informed with what's happening as we decide.

For current intermediate fencers, as you have only been fencing for one week we will be happy to let you take the intermediate sessions next term (assuming they go ahead) with the option of retaking beginners for no additional cost if you wish.

We hope you appreciate this is an unprecedented situation and this is not a decision that has been taken lightly, but needs to be taken to ensure the safety of all members, the coaches and their families as far as possible.

Streatham sent a team, including Gavin (Epee), Ceri (Sabre), Oliver(Men's foil) and Janice (Women's foil) to Wimbledon FC to fence the yearly match, The Pip Rowland. This time we did a lot better and in an achingly close match almost walked away with victory, but ending up loosing 39-40!! Maybe next year aye!

Fencing starts up again tonight at Streatham! 6pm for the juniors and 7.30pm for the adults.

Thanks to all the parents of juniors for helping us deal with restricting numbers by booking places in advance. There are now no places left on the foil course, though there are still a few spaces left for sabre.

Don't further that annual and term subscriptions are now due. If you could pay as soon as possible, that'd be great.

Happy Thursday everyone. There's no fencing over the summer but there will be a Summer Social.

This year we will be paying a visit to The Wallace Collection, Hertford House, Manchester Square, London, W1U 3BN to see their marvellous collection of swords and armour.

We will meet at 1.00pm on Saturday 24th August 2019 outside the main entrance to the museum. After a leisurely period at the museum we will retire to a nearby pub, The Golden Eagle, 59 Marylebone Lane, W1U 2NY, for afternoon refreshments.

We handed out some of the club trophies last night. First up, Oliver who went undefeated in the competition a few weeks ago to claim the foil trophy. He gets his gong from Matt, last year's winner.

It's Thursday so it's time to fence! The club epee championships take place tonight,so be at Dunraven as close to 7.30pm as you can if you want to take part. Don't worry if you don't want to do the comp - there'll be plenty of room for space who just wants to fence normally to enjoy themselves too!

Another Thursday, another evening of fencing! After last week's closely fought foil contest, it's time for the club sabre championships tonight. We'll be kicking off as close to 7.30pm as we can so make certain you get there early!

Thursday saw the annual club foil competition. Congratulations to Oliver who went undefeated across the evening to claim the trophy! Well done to everyone who competed. Eight fencers took part on three pistes as we rattled through a grand total of 28 fights in just two hours! Roll on the sabre competition next week!

Brace yourselves! It's time for our annual senior club competitions. Want to secure bragging rights in one, two or all three weapons? This is your chance.

We're be fencing the three weapons on consecutive Thursday nights:

13th June - Foil

20th June - Sabre

27th June - Epee

The ultimate prize is the 'Master At Arms' (best overall in 3 weapons)! Last years winner was Matt Allwood.

The format is a poule unique, with bouts up to 5 hits. The person with the most victories wins. If there is a draw in the number of victories then an additional fight will occur between those fencers to decide the final winner.

We're be getting started as early as possible at 7.45pm each night. If you're late, you may have to fence mutiple people in a row to catch up!

On the news front, Streatham fencer Ceri Thomas competed at sabre in the veterans national championships in Manchester over the weekend. He finished 6th overall, but earned a gold medal as the highest-placed fencer in category 2 (50-59 years of age).

Happy Thursday! Fencing is on as usual tonight… well, 'as usual' except for one small change. After saying goodbye to coach Dan tonight, we say hello to a new addition to the coaching team this evening..

Our new coach Marco will open the junior session with warmups from 6pm and will be joined as usual by Alan at 6:30pm.

When the seniors begin at 7.30pm, Alan and Marco will be alternating roles on a term-by-term basis, with one running the beginners class and the other giving one-on-one lessons to senior fencers.

Marco came for a trial session at the end of last term, but can everyone please make an extra effort to make him feel welcome as he begins his proper tenure at the club this evening. Thanks!
