Elsie Suddaby, There were shepherds abiding in the fields... - Messiah

- Dec 21st.
Time for some shepherds I think and here's a Blast from the Past with one of my father's favourites, Elsie Suddaby!
I think she was just warming up in the first recit but the Angel of the Lord really gets her going and then we're off for a fascinating trip to the 1930s with the Philharmonia Choir.

From Handel's Messiah. Elsie Suddaby singing with the Philharmonic Choir. Charles Kennedy Scott conducting an unidentified orchestra. Recorded in 1930.

Richard van Allan - L'Enfance du Christ - O misere des rois

- Dec 17th:
Not so Christmassy perhaps but this follows on so well from yesterday that I decided to go with it.
Berlioz certainly shows us another side of Herod's character and this performance by the late, very much missed Richard Van Allan almost makes you feel sorry for him!.

The beautiful music of Berlioz. Here is Herod's dream from L'Enfance du Christ sung by British bass-baritone Richard van Allan. TV Film, 1985.

Eileen Farrell sings Debussy's " Noël des enfants qui n'ont plus de maisons."

- Dec 13th:
American soprano, Eileen Farrell, was one of the first cross-over artists with rep ranging from Handel and Wagner to Bernstein and the Blues. Sadly this performance of Debussy's WW1 protest song seems all too appropriate.

- Dec 12th:
A gentle American song from the Berio collection of eleven Folksongs which he arranged for a small chamber ensemble and the legendary Cathy Berberian - a 'quick-change' artist in every sense!
