Originally, Bacchanal Mas, the band was established in 2007 by Paul O’Donoghue and Richard Gallimore. In 2011 we rebranded and became “UCOM – United Colours of Mas”, a name reflective of our identity. At UCOM we pride ourselves on our commitment to the historic traditions of mas and fusing them with modern design and techniques. We constantly evolve and innovate when it comes to costume design and

concepts, customer service, road experience and exciting themes. UCOM Carnival has won 1st place in the Notting Hill Carnival Adult Fun & Fantasy category multiple times. In 2019 we achieved 1st place in the Adult Fun & Fantasy category, Band Of The Year, Best Dutty Mas Band and Best Sound System award with RC1 Audio in both 2019 and 2022. In 2019, UCOM collaborated with Alvaro Barrington to create a full “On The Road Concert” featuring Patrice Roberts, Machel Montano, Motto, Skinny Fabulous, Mr Killa and Teddyson John which was a truly once-in-a-lifetime road experience. The Team consists of Paul O’Donoghue (Designer), Adunni Adams (Director and Project Manager) and Steve Clarke (Band Leader). Promoted Private Sections include Kenvee, One Paradise x Shades Worldwide, Onyx Mas and Socaholic UK. We are looking forward to a positive and exciting 2023 as we present “Aves – Birds of the Tropics” for the London Notting Hill Carnival.

Section 9 - PASSIFLORA

The Passion Flower (passiflora) flower grows up high in the jungle canopy and its distinctive white and purple colors make it stand out from the lush green scenery. The Passion flower is one of the most beautiful flowers found in the jungle and it is often compared to the orchid.

Vivid tones of deep purple, lavender, striking greens combined with white and gold personify this exotic flower.

Section 8 - Nukini

The Nukini form part of the group of Pano-speaking peoples that inhabit the Juruá valley region and that share both very similar ways of life and views of the world, and a devastating history of dispossession, violence and exploitation since the mid-19th century at the hands of the rubber industry.

An eclectic mix of Teal, Aqua, Amber, Orange and Gold personify this tribal section.

Section number 7 - ANACONDA

The green anaconda can be found in northern South America, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Brazil, northeast Peru, northern Bolivia, Guyana and Trinidad. Because of its large size, the green anaconda is cumbersome on land but stealthy in water. It spends most of its time underwater waiting for prey, but on occasion waits in the trees and drops down to surprise prey. Its preferred habitats are slow moving rivers, flooded forest floors and swamps.

Shades of greens, yellows, browns and nudes combined with gold depict this snake 🐍

Sections 5 - ARAWAK

Arawaks are indigenous people from South America and the Caribbean. They were large in number but were nearly exterminated during colonial times. Today, small groups survive mostly in Venezuela, Colombia, Guyana, Brazil, and Ecuador. The different dialects spoken by these tribes are known as Arawak languages.

Vibrant shades of yellows combined with striking metallic god and touches of turquoise.

Our Story

United Colours of Mas (UCOM Carnival) is the UK’s premier, award winning carnival band.

Originally launched in 2007 with the birth name Bacchanal Mas, they hit the road at Notting Hill Carnival as UCOM for the first time in 2011.

UCOM now combines Hype Mas, Socaholic UK, Amorous Mas London and Onyx Mas to form UCOM Carnival & Associates.

The band’s Creative Director, Paul O’Donoghue is an award winning international designer and has been in the business of costume design and making mas for over 20 years.

Under his guidance along with Band Leader, Steve Clarke and Co-Designers Renata Gordon and Loic Corvo the band continuously strives to be original and ground-breaking, at the same time paying respect to the traditions of carnival by creating mas with meaning and costumes that tell a story.

Uniquely, UCOM has a mas camp that is active year round and in the run up to carnival, the doors to the workshop are open to anyone interested in learning about carnival arts and the craft of making mas. Just drop in, get involved and keep the carnival rituals alive.

At Notting Hill Carnival, UCOM offers an unrivalled, premium two day carnival experience and is all inclusive in every sense, welcoming people into their carnival family from all walks of life and from all over the world, regardless of race, nationality and sexuality.
