As we welcome 2025 we’d like to take the opportunity to tell you a bit about who we are.

Longfield Hall is a performance venue and community hub in the heart of south London. Our beautiful Victorian building dates from 1889.

It’s had many users since it opened – everything from Cinderella dances to “fruit socials”. In the 1970s it was home to Britain’s first publicly-funded Black Theatre company, Dark & Light Theatre Club 🎭

It is now managed by Longfield Hall Trust, a registered charity, for and on behalf of the local community. The hall is a community space where everyone can come together for a wide range of activities.

Our Story

Longfield Hall was built by William Minet and completed in 1889 as a meeting place and community centre for the estate developed by the Minet family between Brixton and Camberwell.

The Hall is Grade II listed and is an excellent and intact example of a late Victorian community hall. Our stage in the Upper Hall dates from this time.

Longfield Hall has had many users since it opened – everything from Cinderella dances to “fruit socials”. In the 1970s it was home to Britain’s first publicly-funded Black Theatre company, Dark & Light Theatre Club.

Since 1992, the Hall has been managed by local community volunteers as "The Friends of Longfield Hall". In January 2010 the organisation became a registered charity and was renamed Longfield Hall Trust. Nowadays, the Hall has over 15 regular weekly user groups and over 500 people use the hall each week. We are the principal home of the McAlpine Dance Studio and The Nest Pre-school as well as hosting several churches on Sundays; a community choir; a Keep Fit group; a Capoeira group; a yoga group and two pilates groups. Longfeld Hall is also used as a rehearsal and performance space by Glasshouse Theatre and several professional dancers, as well as a space for public meetings, film shoots, wedding receptions, parties and other rites of passage. If you would like to hire our hall or find out more about what we do please check out our website for more details.
