I give up.

We all feel that way sometimes. Including your friendly neighbourhood industry agony uncle. But after 30+ years in the business, I am still here.

Here is a short thread of tips that have helped me in tough times in case somebody else needs them too.

First, I take a breath, step back & explore my feelings.
Is it just a bad day, week or month bringing me down or are there deeper mental, physical or emotional issues needing to be addressed. (And yes, it can be both). Separating them out can help with coping strategies.

In our image driven world it can be hard, but I remind myself to drop the 'showbiz mask' we often feel pressured to wear (especially on socials) and talk honestly to trusted friends &, if need be, to qualified professionals. Helpers often find it especially hard to ask for help...but it is an essential strength not a weakness.

If I still feel like giving up on a project, an idea or even on a 'dream', I give myself the freedom to do just that without worrying about my image to others.
A time out can be short or long but when it is needed it is needed, & it can often the start of a better come back on your own terms.

If this post resonates and you are in need of further help please check out Arts Minds dot co dot uk a very useful hub to many industry support resources.

I always try to include hashtag support resources in my own guides and courses not because it is useful, but because in our increasingly uncertain and challenging business it is ESSENTIAL.

My latest guide on hashtag for hashtag is no exception, along with tried and tested tips for finding work, understanding contracts and working through all the important aspects of managing your acting career without agent support.

''You spend as much time coaching other performers as you do on your own career. You should look at making that PART of your career.''

It's been 25 years since a good friend said that to me.

Here are the 5 biggest lessons I have learned from successful clients along the way:

Learn and Adapt: Draw on lessons from experience, but don’t cling too tightly to “the way it has always been done.” Flexibility is key to growth & longevity alike.

Balance Your Life: Treat your acting career as important, but don’t let it consume you. Balance is essential for sustained wellbeing & wellbeing is a key component of success.

Value Feedback but take responsibility: Listen to mentors, colleagues, and audiences, but make your own decisions. Trust your instincts—they’re your greatest asset.

Most importantly of all:

Hold on to hope. If you are 'only as good as your last gig', you might yet be as great as your next one. Be realistic but stay optimistic that what’s for you will never pass you by. If it hasn’t shown up yet, it might be just around the corner.

Thank you to all of my current and past coaching clients. If you'd like to be one of the first of the next 25 years, please drop me a DM or an email via [email protected]

Representing yourself as an actor can be challenging, especially with the industry under pressure. More actors are seeking representation than agencies can accommodate, and increasing agency closures add to the difficulties. Here are some tips to help self-representing actors thrive:

Reject Outdated Mindsets: Self-repping isn't "less than" having an agent or a reflection on your talent. Some actors choose self-representation, while others undertake it while searching for an agent. Career progress comes from effectively combining acting and rep skills—even if you are your own agent.

Stay Informed: Wider industry knowledge is a prerequisite for effective agenting. As an actor, work on your craft, but as your own agent, stay on top of industry news and trends. Read industry publications, join groups and forums, and use LinkedIn. Actively search for news rather than being reactive.

Stay Organised: Top agents keep detailed records of clients' auditions, callbacks, and feedback. Use a spreadsheet or app to track your submissions and follow-ups. Set regular review times to assess what is working and what isn't.

Network and Support: Connect with and support other self-repped actors on social media and in real life. Pooled knowledge can make a difference for everyone. Sharing experiences and insights can combat the feeling that "everyone else is progressing except me."

Leverage Your Skills: Use the skills you develop in representing yourself to your advantage. Whether it’s negotiating contracts, promoting your work, or managing your schedule, these skills can be incredibly valuable throughout your career.

Seek Professional Guidance: I’ve been an independent sounding board for many self-repped actors over the years. I have three spaces available for new coaching clients in July. If you'd like a sample one-on-one session at a 50% discount, please drop me a DM or book via www.johnbyrnecreativecoaching.com

Remember, self-representation can be a powerful and empowering choice. With the right strategies and support, you can navigate the industry successfully and achieve your goals. Let's work together to unlock your potential and find the best path for your career.

The creative industry can be a tough one. It’s disheartening to feel that your talents are being overlooked and your progress largely at the mercy of others. Constant insecurity, setbacks and lack of recognition can be overwhelming, making you feel isolated and doubting your potential and future.
