The woman in the picture is Sista Culcha. A pioneering trailblazer in the UK sound system fraternity, and the person responsible for introducing me to, and giving me my first tutelage in sound system.

Culcha, real name Donna Moore, has a long history in music from her homeland of Guyana to the UK. As well as being one of the few female sound system selectors and mic chanters at the time, she is known not just for her deep music knowledge, skill and versatility, but also for her activism and particularly her stance against slack lyrics in dancehall music, regularly counteracting lyrics in big tunes with her own.

I was about 9 years old when late one night in South London, I heard reggae music being played outdoors on a sound system. Johnny Osbourne’s “Water Pumping” is the tune that stuck with me most from that night. This was my lightning rod moment that all creatives have; the moment I became obsessed with sound system and dancehall.

Culcha was a close family friend, a mother. and youth worker. I believe these factors all contributed to her taking me under her wing and endulging my curiosity and fascination with music and sound system.

My journey as a DJ, sound system operator and owner, MC/host, and business owner is rooted in this womans influence. There would be no DJ Croc without Sista Culcha. Everything good I do or achieve in this industry I owe in part to her.

TBT: Motivate Sound, Wolverhampton (circa. 1992)

This was the year I became selector on a big sound. (What is pictured here is only a fraction of the full sound system). Motivate was the peoples sound in Wolverhampton. The owner, Fathead, to my left with the gold chain, was also a youth worker, and did a great job at encouraging the musical talents of the youths he worked with in the area, something I carried forward when I became a youth worker shortly after. One evening I got a chance to play some of my records at youth club at what was the Culture Centre. I was 16 or 17 at the time and Fathead was doing a DJ workshop there. Fathead said to me he liked the way I juggled and mixed and asked me if I wanted to play on his sound, Motivate. As a yout’ who always enjoyed watching Motivate play I was fully gassed to be asked by the owner to become a member of the sound; even more so when this picture appeared in the local newspaper, but more importantly, this invitation validated my skills and told my young inner self that I was good enough to be here doing this. This encouragement was pivotal for me as a yout’

Unfortunately, due to me moving to London the following year to attend uni. and having to pass exams to get there, my tenure on the sound didn’t last long. I’ll always be eternally grateful to Fathead and the rest of the Motivate family for their part in my journey as a DJ, owner of my own sound system, and business owner.

I don’t think I’ve done a TBT (Throwback Thursday) post so…🤷🏾‍♂️ A teenage DJ Croc with Motivate Sound…I joined the sound around 1992. It was all about vibes and serving and representing the people, a standard I still carry to this day. Salute Fathead and the whole Crew 🫡🖤
