There's a myth that trees stop growing during the autumn and winter. The lack of leaves, fruits and flowers does not equate to a tree being dormant. In fact, many trees, both broad leaved and coniferous continue to grow their roots, produce buds and swell their trunks during these periods. The protective layer created by other plant material on the top layer of soil helps to encourage a more harmonious atmosphere for the growing roots to continue sustaining the trees. This is especially useful in temperate zones where many trees have shed their leaves and therefore unable to obtain energy from that source.
