🎄 Something was missing at 15Hatfields this festive season... but we’ve found it! 🎄

This year, our Christmas tree is more than just a decoration – it’s a statement of our commitment to sustainability.

🌱 Our tree was sourced from Pines and Needles, a carbon-neutral supplier using British trees grown in sustainable forests. It’s an eco-friendly choice with a much smaller carbon footprint than artificial alternatives, and after Christmas, it will be recycled into renewable resources.

✨ Our team got creative with the decorations too! Using upcycled marketing materials, old CDs, circuit boards, and Fairtrade ornaments made from recycled materials, we’ve crafted a truly unique and sustainable festive display.

At 15Hatfields, we’re pleased to see the government committing £22bn to Carbon Capture Storage (CCS) to help reduce emissions and reach net zero by 2050. But we believe it’s not the long-term solution. While CCS helps keep carbon out of the atmosphere, it risks extending our reliance on fossil fuels instead of moving toward cleaner energy sources like hydrogen.

As Warren Campbell, our General Manager, says: “While we support the investment that will help to take carbon out of the system, the reality is that we should not be releasing carbon in the first place, which is what we as a sustainable venue are working tirelessly towards. As such, the government should instead be focusing on using hydrogen power as a cleaner level of energy production, which has no emissions at all.”

We’re excited to launch a carbon reduction campaign in the coming weeks, sharing the steps we’re taking to reduce emissions and urging other venues to follow our lead. Together, we can make a real difference for a sustainable future.

♻️ This week is and we’ve been ‘Waste Warriors’ for many years now – including being ‘zero to landfill’ since 2008.

Of course, our main aim is to prevent waste in the first place but, when that is not possible, we recycle everything we can. For all non-recyclable general waste, we process it through ‘energy from waste’ (EFW) incineration instead of sending it to landfill – which recovers the energy from the waste to generate electricity ⚡️

💡In fact, between 1st Jan – 31st Aug 2024, 15Hatfields diverted 952kg of non-recyclable general waste to EFW incineration instead of landfill.

We work with our trusted partners at Pulse Environmental and Bywaters to fulfil our recycling mission. Our visit to the Bywaters' Lea Riverside recycling facility in East London is pictured below.

🧠 We're calling for more research into microplastics which have been found in human brains for the first time, according to new research in the US.

The study, which is yet to be independently verified and peer reviewed by other scientists, revealed the tiny particles that are less than five millimetres in diameter, are infiltrating human organs, including the brain.

Scientists believe the microplastics are entering the human brain through several pathways including inhalation, ingestion or through the bloodstream.
