Songs that are 40 years old in 2025....

Yes folks, it's true! It has been 40 years since Claire, Bender, Andrew, Brian, & Allison were detained in detention and gave us the Breakfast Club!

This iconic track remains the biggest hit to date for Simple Minds, spending a huge 65 weeks on the chart, unheard of before the days of Mr. Brightside!

The track was originally rejected by the band, then turned down by Roxy Music and also Billy Idol. Eventually is was recorded by the band, was picked up for the soundtrack to the iconic teen film and went on to score a No. 7 hit in the UK and more incredibly a No.1 hit in both the USA and Canada!

Whatever it is, it's brilliant! Jim Kerr added the "Hey Hey Hey Hey" & the "La, La La La La" hooks and a classic was made which still gets everyone singing!

But 40 years ago.......? WOW!!

So here we go…..

SONGS THAT TURN 40 YEARS OLD IN 2025!!

Starting with this, my favourite song of all time. As Paul King himself once said “A good song can mean all things to all people”.

Previously released in early summer 1984, Love & Pride was King’s first release and only peaked at No. 84. Two further releases failed to break the chart that year. Chosen to support Boy George & Culture Club on their Winter 84 tour the buzz around the band amplified & CBS re-released Love & Pride!

The song entered the first chart of 1985 at No. 82 then rose to No. 21 two weeks later, peaking at No. 2 for 3 weeks! It was denied the coveted top spot by Elaine Paige & Barbara Dickson “I Know Him So Well” written by Benny & Bjorn of ABBA.

Love & Pride remained in the UK chart for 3 months. A song that explodes into your ears by going straight into the chorus, accomplishing by big hair and spray painted Doc Marten boots! It epitomises everything about the 80’s in just over 3 minutes!

All things to all people, to me it is my dearest friends from a crazy time in my life, most notably Paul Stewart and also Mary Henson who accompanied me when I hosted the King reunion in 2015 in Coventry, circle complete.
