Good evening from the Concert Saloon!
I know it’s now TWO days late (Masa would never have allowed that), but I can’t let May 4th pass by entirely without a mention. As some will know, Masa was a big Star Wars fan and liked to make a video to acknowledge ‘Star Wars day’ each year. Here is last year’s contribution, with music chosen to be appropriate for this time last year as you might remember!
These days come and go, too
I do not want The Piano Boat to become solely a platform for my own thoughts and feelings, but this is in the interest of balance as these days do come and go, too, as well as those I have spoken about over the last month or so. I know it won’t last forever but this time is an important part in the story of The Piano Boat, so I hope you don’t mind me sharing it.
The poem, ‘Atlas’, by U.A. Fanthorpe:
There is a kind of love called maintenance
Which stores the WD40 and knows when to use it;
Which checks the insurance, and doesn’t forget
The milkman; which remembers to plant bulbs;
Which answers letters; which knows the way
The money goes; which deals with dentists
And Road Fund Tax and meeting trains,
And postcards to the lonely; which upholds
The permanently rickety elaborate
Structures of living, which is Atlas.
And maintenance is the sensible side of love,
Which knows what time and weather are doing
To my brickwork; insulates my faulty wiring;
Laughs at my dryrotten jokes; remembers
My need for gloss and grouting; which keeps
My suspect edifice upright in air,
As Atlas did the sky.
Some thoughts on the future of The Piano Boat are starting to emerge. I’m uncomfortable with the thought of having to make all the decisions on my own now in what was supposed to be a joint project (and we had so much fun doing together), but equally, what we created here feels so special that I know I just need to let that idea settle and get comfortable because the future of this boat is inevitable. I’ve always known it but just had to give it time to let things calm in my mind before I could start to contemplate continuing on my own. Some days are harder than others and I just let it rest on those days. I’m a strong believer that things will happen at the right time. #thepianoboat #pianoboatrachmaninov #pianoboat
The unforeseen difficulties of performing on the canal…
I saw/heard some geese today and it reminded me of this day, trying so hard not to laugh - unsuccessfully! Masa found this so funny but his poker face was much better than mine!
This was recorded back in the summer of 2020. It’s hard to believe it’s almost 4 years ago now, which doesn’t seem so long, but my goodness, it’s a lifetime ago.
Thank you so much for all the kind words of support on my short video earlier this week. I’m so grateful for this wonderful community.
6 months on and on days like this, things feel like they’re going in the right direction. Thank you so much for all the support 🩵
Update, February 2024
I have finally been able to share an update from The Piano Boat, the full video of which you can watch on YouTube including Masa's performance. The link to that video is in the comments below, and this is just a short preview.
I hope to be able to share more news about our wonderful boat soon, and really want to continue this dream that we started together, somehow, and honour Masa's legacy. Thank you all for your patience, kindness and amazing support.
Somehow, this masterpiece seems to be not so often performed in concerts. Certainly, we're familiar with the 'Moonlight', 'Appassionata' and 'Pathetique' Sonatas, but do you know Beethoven's 'Tempest'?
This Sunday evening, Masa will present a reflective, powerful and uplifting programme of Rachmaninov, Beethoven and Gershwin, including the famous 'Rhapsody in Blue'.
We hope you'll join us to round off the weekend with a Virtual Concert!
This comes at 6pm, after we've finished the day's Afternoon Tea Concert Cruise!
Concert tickets: https://www.thepianoboat.com/virtual-concerts
Haven’t we been fortunate with the weather? We’ve just finished our last cruise of this period before we start again with the last two weekends in July - which are already filling up!
Thank you to all our lovely guests over these past couple of weekends, some who have travelled quite a distance!
Onwards to the next ones!
Here's a challenge...
Can you work out what this piece is? You might be able to guess the composer but we could say it's one of his lesser-known works!
Concert this Sunday featuring the whole piece, amongst others!
No cheating by looking at the website first!!

It's been almost 3 years (no doubt you can guess the catalyst) since we started livestreaming every Sunday on Facebook, which then turned into this (we think) wonderful monthly Virtual Concert series!
Masa here talks about the orchestra vs solo piano versions of Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, in his pre-concert talk.
The concert is coming this Sunday, at 4pm! Anywhere in the world, you're most welcome to join us - either live or afterwards with the recording!

We hope to see you on Sunday!
One of Rachmaninov's evocative 'Etudes-Tableaux': Sea and Seagulls. Listen carefully, and you can hear the gulls crying as they swoop across the swelling waves.
