Repost from

Donate your children’s old books during the Stepping Into Stories festival 30 Jan - 4 Feb 2024 so they can find new homes across the community.

Did you know that across London and the UK 1 in 4 disadvantaged children owns fewer than 10 books, whilst 1 in 8 has none at all! This has an impact not only on these children’s academic outcomes but also on their wellbeing, emotional development and sense of themselves as a reader.

The Children’s Book Project tackles this ‘book gap’ and gifts donated books to targeted communities across the Capital. Over 500 schools, community groups, women’s groups and prisons nationwide put on book gifting events at which children are invited to choose a book to take home and keep. The charity expects to gift upwards of 350,000 books this year.

Please bring in any books your children have grown out of so that they can find new homes with others across the local community. Alternatively you may wish to purchase an old favourite to donate. We can accept any children’s books in good condition.

Join us for our Free online panel; discussion on Fostering Empathy Through Children's Books with Cath Howe, Rashmi Sirdeshpande and Sarah Mears

What is empathy? How can we build it? And what‘s the connection with reading? Empathy is needed now more than ever. With the rising in children’s mental health and behavioural problems after Covid, and society becoming increasingly polarised, empathy is the key to creating a kinder, less divided, world. In this timely and fascinating panel, we’ll delve into what empathy is (and isn’t), how it’s a learnable skill, and how reading is a powerful tool to build it.

We’re joined by two wonderful authors, Cath Howe and Rashmi Sirdeshpande, together with Sarah Mears MBE, co-founder of EmpathyLab, the charitable social enterprise behind Empathy Day and a new book-based empathy movement.

Cath has a reputation for creating characters whose lives are hard, and who generate enormous empathy in the reader as we watch them find their way forward. Look out for Ella in Ella on the Outside. Rashmi writes award-winning picture books and non-fiction and in spring 2023, she worked with EmpathyLab to create We’ve Got This! an inspiring non-fiction empathy handbook for children, full of creative ideas to help them build their empathy superpower.

Through this panel of renowned children’s writers and advocates, we will celebrate the current period of awakening to authentic disabled stories within children’s literature and the dignified reality being expressed for young readers by those with lived experience. Session participants will also receive a hand-selected reading list of outstanding children’s books containing positive examples of disability.
