In collaboration with Lutron Electronics, the programme features lively panel discussions and short, sharp presentations from high-profile designers working across all sectors of design – whether that’s lighting, interiors or architecture.

Our wonderful Association Partner the ILP returns to LiGHT 23 with their enlightening How to be Brilliant series!

This session, presented as part of [d]arc thoughts, is a collaborative effort with BEGA and features the insightful speaker Paul Traynor of LIGHT BUREAU 💡

There is a place for spectacular lighting - where the effect is the whole project - but lighting is also about supporting a higher objective and creating a first class user-experience. The aim of this presentation is to illustrate how lighting design done properly is subtle and all about the detail. Moderated by Sarah Cullen, speakers John Williams from SpaceInvader and Paul Shoosmith of Lightforms take to the stage on Wednesday 22 November 2023 to share SpaceInvader’s spectacular work with Lightforms on one of the UK’s most environmentally friendly office buildings.

Foster + Partners has collaborated with artist Amelia Peng, an MA Textiles student at the Royal College of Art, along with musicians and composers from the Royal College of Music to create an installation for the London Design Biennale 2023.

Inner Peace combines smart interactive textiles and musical performance to engage visitors in an immersive display, with their feelings and emotions directing the visual effects.

Shining a Light on the National Portrait Gallery at LiGHT 23 💡

Exhibition designer Pippa Nissen of Nissen Richards Studio and long-time collaborator, lighting designer Hughes of Studio ZNA, will talk about the complex refurbishment of the National Portrait Gallery, which re-opened in June of this year.

Pippa Nissen said: “For the refurbishment of The National Portrait Gallery, where we needed to light so many incredibly varied, fragile and significant works of art, the depth of collaboration between lighting and exhibition design was put to the test - and came out impeccably.”

Zerlina Hughes adds: “We are very much looking forward to LiGHT'23. There’s always such a great collection of manufacturers and practitioners and it’s of a scale that means you can delve into project and development conversations with a relaxed, more workshop-than-trade-fair approach.”

Driving Human Behaviour with Light is an insightful talk from speaker Tapio Rosenius from Skandal / Lighting Design Collective.

Tapio shares more about his talk: "My talk will help designers in getting started with applying Ambient Communication in their lighting design work. This concept, along with its associated new control technology, proposes a novel role for lighting in projects, offering a dynamic and interactive toolset and business model for designers. Ambient Communication paves the way for a future where our environments become dynamic, responsive companions in our daily lives.

This year’s [d]arc thoughts programme is highly anticipated, with renowned multimedia creative Grimanesa Amoros of Grimanesa Amoros Studio as our headline speaker. Grimanesa is known for her bold installations that intersect history, technology, and architecture by using LED and other materials to share light in a new way. She aims to create lighting sculptures that have a life of their own and express the characteristics of a space. Her approach includes installing and programming each piece on-site, as this direct interaction with the surrounding architecture is vital to creating her work. Her recent piece, AMPLEXUS, demonstrates this for the Noor Light Festival at the Cultural Palace in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. All sequences were completed on-site, and there was no existing preset for the lighting arrangement. She also firmly believes in light's ability to transcend social and geographical boundaries. Her Peruvian heritage is showcased in many of her works, including UROS HOUSE, inspired by the Uros people who still live on Lake Titicaca.
