In today's business world, sharing knowledge is like a two-way street trip. With so much information around, knowledge becomes like gold for helping a company grow. Big corporate events are like special places where people from different parts of the company (and even outside it) can swap ideas, thoughts, and know-how.

AESTHETICS: The visual impact of an event, sets the tone and feel of it. A couple of weeks ago, I was asked by to join a discussion about AI in our industry. The debate was held at This formal space was chosen for its excellent interior layout which has been designed to encourage discussion and promote the exchange of ideas. It was the first time that I have ever been on a panel like this and I must admit to feeling some nerves beforehand, but the formality gave a sense of gravitas to our topic and the occasion. This debate would not have worked nearly as well in a meeting room, marquee or restaurant. Walking into the room with its wood paneling, high back chairs and circular seating hit my visual sense and set the tone of my behaviour for the debate.

I took a couple of days off, away from the office, planned in advance. A business, mentoring trip with a fabulous friend and incredible business coach. We decided to climb Snowdon. Couldn’t be that hard. But we hadn’t taken into account storm ⛈️ Ciarian. By the time I left the car park, first pic, I realised the waterproof trousers, my mother had lent me, were no longer waterproof, this in turn led to my boots becoming swimming pools as the rain ran down my legs! (I have pretty good kit for a non stormy walk!) We knew we weren’t going to make the summit as the risk of being blown off by the 60mph winds were too real. But we got to 80m away and turned around. We weren’t disappointed. We were exhilarated, proud and all felt alive. Now back to catching on the next event I have. Which is in Rome in 2 weeks.

FEEL: Here's one area that AI may have a role to play in, but not for us in the events industry. Haptics is the fast-growing area of technology which is aiming to replicate touch artificially. I think we are a long way off from it being able to integrate seamlessly into society though, and the subtleties of picking up a thin champagne glass, and adjust the grip just enough as it is filled, can't be done yet.

Although AI is clever enough to predict chemical smells from their structure, it can't digitalise them. Smell is so subjective, one person's love of lilies could be another person's hate. Smell is also associated with memories and experience, which thankfully AI is not able to make.

When organising an event, it is important to not only talk to the client about their likes and hates, but also understand and interpret them, and be able to work within those parameters whilst also feeling the confidence to offer other suggestions that they may not have thought about, but that I know will work as a whole with the rest of the event.

James Lord, from ,said in my interview with him that his favourite smell was Roast chicken. For me this reminds me of Sunday's at home with my family, coming back from church in the autumn and the comforting smell of roast chicken welcoming us when we opened the front door.

Back to AI and the influence that they have on the senses within the world of hospitality.

Flavour is an area which I know AI will not be able to encroach upon.

It might help at the outset; the planning and processing, food and drink pairing suggestions, and recipe substitutions, oh, and of course recipe generation. But it can’t take away our experience of taste and flavour. Thermomixes are becoming more prevalent in kitchens, especially professional ones, although I know of some homes with them too and I'm sure that they a place, but I approach food very differently. The process is as much part of the result as the taste is at the end. People often talk about food made with love, I think that takes a person to do.

Have you seen the wonderful film Ratatouille? well that's the part a computer can't do; no, not shoving a rat into your chef's hat, but the love of the process, understanding at some instinctive level what flavours will work together, how just a little more of a pinch of this or that will just make all of the difference.
