From the Other Side with Ila Arun
Actress, Performer, Folk singer.
There are much we know about Ila Arun, that what we can see and hear........
The feel of Rajasthan in her songs through her deep, rustic voice, her popular songs from mainstream Hindi cinema, “choli ki peeche’, ‘Morni Baaga ma Bole’ have stayed on with us through the decades, her characters in Jodha Abkar as Maham Anga, Ghatak amongst others.
Currently, she has received much acclaim for her role in Manto, Ghoomketu as Santo Bua acting alongside Nawazuddin. Her acting poweress through theatre, television in it's early days; all stay on with us.
Yet, do we know the other side of her? Her sense of deep rootedness to the culture, staying connected to our roots and creating an enriching experience for us all, by just being herself. Authentic. Spirited. Real.

Please help us to support underprivileged and daily wage workers struggling to meet their basic needs.
The Covid-19 Pandemic has hit the country and the effects are immense. On 25th March, India’s Prime Minister imposed a nationwide lockdown for 21 days. Migrant labourers were stranded, daily wage workers had no food. There were some families without ration even for a day!
We at United Sisters Foundation, with the permission of the local authorities and with the help of other NGOs have decided to distribute food and hygiene kits to the people who have been severely affected by the lockdown.
To donate: bit.ly/usf-corona
We have distributed our first set of 60 kits to families in Chembur and Reay Road. Our next set of kits will be distributed to needy families in Colaba, Juhu and Bandra.
A Big Thank You to all our donors for the generous contributions. With all your support, we have been able to raise funds for 350 kits.
We aim to distribute 5000 kits. Please help us to support underprivileged and daily wage workers struggling to meet their basic needs.
Remember, we rise by lifting others.

Panama
SURVIVAL A couple of years ago I did ‘The Island with Bear Grylls’ where 10 of us, 5 men and 5 women were dropped off on a desert Island in Panama with no clothes, no shoes, no mobile phone, no computer, no internet, no toilet roll, no toothbrush, no shampoo, no hand wash ( we washed with salt water) no pen, no paper, no music, no food and no water. For 1 month. I survived. 6 months later I did a show called, ‘Celebs in Solitary’ where I was locked in a tin shed in a derelict car park in Belfast for 5 days with no natural light, no contact at all with the outside world and just enough food to last me five days. I survived. This is how I did it. It is MIND OVER MATTER. It is a test of mental strength over physical strength. You do not need to eat as much food as you think, we eat way too much. Ghandi survived 21 days of complete starvation whilst trying to restore independence and and peace to India. We kept BUSY. The men hunted, started the fire, built things and the girls sat around the fire, cooked, cleaned and chatted about weddings. We TALKED TO EACH OTHER, about everything. But mostly about the future. We told stories. WE MADE PLANS about what we were going to do if we got out of there alive. We DREAMED a lot. Dreams keep you alive, and will help you to survive. We all lost 2 stone, had grey roots, hairy armpits, and a bikini line that extended to the knee but we lived. I wrote an article for The Guardian last year about how survival doesn’t discriminate. It doesn’t matter what your race religion colour gender sexuality or class is, the struggle in survival is the same for everyone https://www.theguardian.com/profile/shaziamirza In solitary confinement I kept busy, I wrote a new stand up show, a book and a TV show. I made plans and had TARGETS for each day. I did my best writing in solitary. Nelson Mandela & Anne Frank also did their best work in solitary. Just saying. There is so mu
