I would like to run a series of origami workshops for a group of 10 people who, over 10 weeks making 10 cranes per session each, will create a 1,000 origami cranes (a Senbazuru). They are open to anyone who is struggling with the grief of losing someone to Covid. This will be a place to talk, listen, share and create beauty together. The workshops will take place at Willesden Green library every Tuesday from 6.45pm to 7.45pm starting on 03/10/23 and will cost £15 each. You will need to commit to taking part in all 10 workshops.

The practice of Senbazuru is often spoken of in relation to one person in particular – a young girl named Sadako Sasaki.  At two years old, Sadako became a person affected by the bombing of Hiroshima.  While Sadako survived the bombing, she was severely irradiated and died at the age of 12 from leukaemia caused by the after effects. Before she died, Sadako set herself the task of folding 1,000 paper cranes.  As paper was in short supply she made use of scrap paper – anything she could get her hands on in the hospital to enable her to complete her objective. Some versions of the tale say that she didn’t make her final goal and that her friends and family contributed to it after her death, while others say that she both met and surpassed it.

Either way, she became a symbol of optimism and resilience in the face of adversity.

Look where I did an origami session yesterday! Met some lovely people and thanks to Aliyah for such a fab testimonial ….. “As part of our Summer of Growth wellbeing initiative at Mattel EMEA, we asked Vanessa to come to our UK office to provide an Origami session for our employees. The objective was to offer them a ‘new skill’ workshop to help develop them professionally and personally. Vanessa was brilliant with our employees, making sure to help each person as much as they needed and being a constant guide throughout the session. The event was well received with employees who noted that doing Origami gave them better attention to detail and patience skills. We hope to run more successful events like this and couldn’t have done it without Vanessa’s great help and teaching!”

“Vanessa is a wonderful teacher. She showed us clearly and patiently how to make the most beautiful flowers. She encouraged creativity and expression and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the session. It was such a positive, fun and relaxing experience. We would not hesitate to recommend Vanessa and we will surely invite her back for another session”

Struggling to find a Christmas present for the person who has everything? Bored of buying yet “more stuff”? Why not buy a voucher for your partner and a friend to have a go at learning the art of Origami.

I’ll travel to a coffee shop near your home (Greater London) and run a one hour bespoke session that enables both people to make a striking Origami design. These can then be kept as a memento. You don’t need any previous experience and the price (£95 for two people) also includes a gift pack for each person to take away.

Give something this Christmas that is creative, calming, fun and doesn’t cost the Earth.

(NB: I can also do one to one and group sessions, so if you’d prefer these instead, please get in touch to discuss.)

“Vanessa arrived early to our event allowing her to be completely set up for the first guests arrival. She was very enthusiastic and engaging with our guests. The sponsors of the origami were very pleased, and this experience engaged a lot of guests to their stand. The results from our event surveys showed the origami experience was one of the guests favourite activities on offer throughout the evening. With experiential events at the fore front of our business we will definitely book Vanessa again for future events.” Maisie (Senior Event Executive, Jacobs Media Group)

“Thank you for helping to make my daughter's birthday even more special and attractive. The kids were very excited. I heard that one girl kept doing origami even after she got home. She must have enjoyed your lessons very much. Other children were also proud to show off their masterpieces to their mothers.”
