PUSHING BOUNDARIES 💫 | To achieve the scale that Tim McGraw wanted within the parameters of an arena venue, we used an automation system to track the LED screens horizontally across the stage. This consists of a downstage screen which splits in two, and tracks up and off stage simultaneously to meet with a central up-stage screen, transforming seamlessly into one huge 32m wide panoramic screen that fills the arena. Here you can see a CAD video of the transformation…

It looks just as stunning in CAD!
Standing at 67m tall and measuring 130m in diameter, Expo’s Al Wasl is the world’s largest 360-degree projection surface. This animation was made to help us design the staging, rigging and automation, as well as bespoke brackets, trusses and towers for the complex audio and lighting system inside. Up to 252 laser projectors work to splash images onto the surface of Al Wasl, creating a fully immersive experience that can be viewed from inside or outside of the dome.

It’s all in the detail. Each of the six masts that make up Ed Sheeran’s cable net stage feature 7 hoops containing lighting fixtures and LED display panels for added visuals. Also suspended from each mast is a 6m wide x 8m tall double sided LED display screen in the shape of a plectrum.
CAD Designer, Esteniah Williams had the job of recreating artwork from the album to adorn the frames of these giant plectrums. Find out more over on the site - https://bit.ly/3wcjsia

A closer look at the pioneering stage set up for Ed Sheeran’s recent Mathematics tour 🔍️.
This 360 degree stage consists of a central revolve stage surrounded by six 30m high masts. Made from 7.5 tonnes of truss, the masts support a complex cable net system that enables 55 tonnes of kit to be suspended above the stage. No mean feat considering the whole thing takes just 4 days to build at each site!

Visualising Munich’s largest ever open-air concert series for Bavaria Sounds 2022.
Not only did the stage design need to have real firepower from a distance but it also needed its own distinct look and feel. The result was a huge 150-metre-wide diamond shaped stage outlined with a striking LED strip, a giant semi-transparent central LED video screen, a central bridge that acted as a band roof, 1,600sqm of angled video screens on the wings, 1,086 lighting fixtures, 18 audio delay towers, 20 sky beams, 6 IMAG screens, and a bespoke runway and B Stage.

A look back at some CAD from Genesis’ Last Domino tour. ✍️ We worked closely with Woodroffe Bassett Design on the stand out lighting for this farewell tour. The rotating columns had LED screens on the front and automated lighting fixtures on the back. These columns could be tracked together to create a seamless screen surface, or tracked apart to create separate columns. Here you can see them tracked apart to create the iconic heart backdrop 💙
So much of what we do starts with CAD. Take Roger Water’s show-stealing lazer tunnel for his This Is Not Drill tour, for instance. This drawing allowed us to visualise exactly where the 16 lazer towers would sit in order to create the spectacular illusion.\

Two summers ago Piers was out in Tokyo for an Olympics Ceremony that was mired in uncertainty. There is no precedent, no script to follow for bringing people together during a health crisis. But by building on our learnings from previous Olympic Ceremonies, we were able to provide the talented Japanese team with the technical insight and emotional support to create something spectacular, against all odds.
This rehearsal for the dazzling drone light show by Intel was a highlight. The giant swarm of 1,824 drones came together to form a spectacular recreation of the Earth, serving as a reminder of the unifying power of the Olympic Games.

Wonder Works Spring Dinner
Last night’s Spring Dinner was lots of fun. So much so that we forgot to take any photos! We did capture the Chocolate Bomb dessert though...
This nifty bit of kit has travelled well over the past couple of years. Here the Trimble SX10 laser scanner is busy capturing 3D information in Hatta for UAE's National Day but this week it's been hard at work on site at the #ABBAVoyage arena. Always with CAD expert Ben O’Neill by its side! #TrimbleSX10
What a year 2021 has been! It’s had its ups and downs but we are grateful to have worked on some fantastic projects both near and far. Transforming the desert into a destination at Expo, lighting a legacy for Genesis’ farewell tour, bringing people together during lockdown in Tokyo, and creating a lake on a lake in Hatta. Today we look back at some highlights from the year just gone.
2022 is shaping up to be a busy year too, starting with an exciting new voyage with Abba. More on that to come….
Happy New Year from the Wonder Works team! xx
Hogwarts Express
The Hogwart's Express is back to light up Wonder Works HQ, and this year we’ve gone the extra mile!
Using a combination of Raspberry Pi to detect motion from a passer by, a sequence of projection, train motion and house lighting is triggered. We used NodeRed to drive the logic behind the system, QLC+ to run the lights within the houses, with Show Cue System triggering the sequence. The custom code to drive the train was written on an ESP8266 microprocessor.
Another festive triumph by Production Manager Andrew Fugle and Junior CAD Designer Esteniah Williams!
Wishing you all a very happy holiday from everyone at Wonder Works. See you on the other side! xx
Our illuminated courtyard in Caledonian Rd is officially ready for Christmas! 🌟 Designed by Lomax & Chi, installed by Wonder Works, engineering by Conisbee. Filmed on DJI Pocket. You're welcome! 🎄
