Happy New Year!
Osanna in Excelsis, Mass in B minor - Bach
This is one of the most celebratory songs possible, really. Sung by the angels, the text glorifies God in the highest heavens, and bids peace to all people on earth, and Bach's wonderful triple time music fits in beautifully amongst some of the best waltzes. A fitting way to start the new year! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_iL6UeDPk0

Weihnachtsbaum - Liszt
Although he led a scandalous life as a young piano virtuoso, in his later years Franz Liszt joined the Third Order of Saint Francis and took several minor orders within the Catholic Church (including exorcist…). He wrote his “Christmas Tree” suite in 1881 for his granddaughter Daniela, who had the misfortune of being born on December 24; perhaps she was consoled by the thought that a piece by Liszt has got to be one of the better Christmas/birthday presents anyone has ever received. This gentle piece is based on a number of traditional carols, Liszt

Bach: Christmas Oratorio
This over 2.5 hour long choral festive extravaganza is one of the best pieces of classical Christmas music. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio is divided into 6 cantatas, each to be performed in the days following Christmas. The first part, performed on Christmas Day, pronounces the Holy birth; the second, for the 26th, describes the annunciation to the shepherds; the third, the adoration of the shepherds, and so on. Each section has its own distinctive character, brought to life in Bach’s masterful composition, and is in equal parts intense, reflective, and jubilant. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJts7bpW2VE

Merry Christmas to you all!
Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker
Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker is perhaps the most famous classical Christmas music ever. Every December one hears its best-known numbers everywhere, especially the Trepak, the Waltz of the Flowers, the March and the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. Rimsky- Korsakov - Christmas Eve Suite

Rimsky-Korsakov adapted this suite from the music he wrote for his opera Christmas Eve, which was based on an eponymous short story by Gogol. On Christmas Eve, Vakula catches the devil and rides on his back in order to get the perfect present for his girl: a pair of the Tsaritsa’s slippers! The suite includes music from this wild ride and a grand polonaise to represent the court of Catherine the Great. ,

Mendelssohn - Hark The Herald Angels Sing
Did you know that the chorus of this classic carol was originally going to be, "Hark! How all the welkin rings / Glory to the King of Kings"? And its lyricist, Charles Wesley, originally wanted some slow and rather depressing music to accompany it? Thank goodness Mendelssohn stuck his oar in with his superb melody.

Arnold Bax – November Woods (1917)

Though ostensibly inspired by nature, Bax’s November Woods also acts as a musical portrait of his turbulent love affair with pianist Harriet Cohen. An often unsettling work, the tone poem fluctuates between stormy drama and quiet ecstasy, yet fades to a quiet and unresolved finish.

Ralph Vaughan Williams, Autumn section of Folk Songs of the Four Seasons
First performed in 1950 but not recorded until 2009, Vaughan Williams's "folk song cantata" was composed for a women's choral festival; the composer was pleased to have the opportunity to write a piece specifically designed for amateur singers. The Autumn section of the cantata features the elegiac "Unquiet Grave" (in which, as the composer put it, "the young maiden meets her dead lover among the storms and cold winds of autumn") bookended by two harvest songs.

Thea Musgrave: ‘Autumn’ from The Seasons
Scottish composer Thea Musgrave was commissioned in 1988 by the The Academy of St Martin’s in the Fields to depict the earth’s seasons in music.

The piece was inspired by Renaissance artist Piero di Cosimo’s painting Caccia Primitiva, which depicts a gory hunting scene, and it begins with ‘Autumn’, which is restless and ominous.

Tōru Takemitsu: November Steps
Contemporary Japanese composer Takemitsu’s atmospheric November Steps was commissioned for the New York Philharmonic Orchestra’s 125th anniversary, and he composed it in a secluded mountain retreat.

Like much of Takemitsu’s music, it’s notable for combining traditional Japanese instruments – in this case the biwa and the shakuhachi – with Western orchestral forces. Takemitsu was strongly influenced by composers like Debussy and Messiaen, as well as Japanese music traditions, and he’s depicted autumn in several other works, including his 1973 orchestral work Autumn, and Ceremonial, An Autumn Ode.

Astor Piazzolla: ‘Autumn’ from The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires
About 245 years after Vivaldi captured the four seasons in music, Argentine composer Piazzolla created a tango-infused homage to the Baroque composer’s enduring work.

Piazzolla’s series of single tango movements in Las Cuatro Estaciones Porteñas contain several references to Vivaldi’s famous work, and autumn is suitably dramatic, with raindrops and the deep light and shade cast by a low, wintery sun audible in the music.

George Frideric Handel: Music for the Royal Fireworks

In 1749, King George II requested that Handel compose a suite to accompany a grand firework display in London’s Green Park. The work was so highly anticipated that over 12,000 people tried to travel to Vauxhall Gardens to watch a full rehearsal, bringing the surrounding streets to a complete standstill for several hours.

On the day of the firework display, Handel’s music outshined the fireworks themselves – the weather was poor and one of the wooden pavilions built specially for the occasion caught fire.

Oliver Knussen – Flourish with fireworks

Taking a strong influence from Stravinsky, Knussen’s short orchestral piece Flourish with fireworks captures the characteristics of every kind of firework imaginable – there are soaring chromatics that fly high like rockets, trills that spin like Catherine Wheels and pizzicato sections that are as bright as sparklers

Joseph Haydn: Symphony No. 59 in A major ‘Fire’

The nickname ‘Fire’ was not given to his Symphony No. 59 by Haydn himself, but it’s not difficult to see why the name has stuck. With a first movement marked ‘presto’, the work begins with a fast and brave tempo that most composers would use for a climactic final movement.

The energy continues throughout, even in the andante second movement, which crackles with ornamentation above a constantly shifting bass part. The third movement, a minuet and trio, relies on an antiphonal theme between the high and low sections of the orchestra, and the final movement is punctuated with the bright call of horns.

Saint-Saens: Danse Macabre
Saint-Saens explores the supernatural macabre in his chilling orchestral waltz Danse Macabre, one of the best pieces of classical music for Halloween. The soothing chimes of a bell tolling midnight lulls the listener into a false sense of security, until the infamous violin solo. The sole use of the violin’s open strings creates a bare, jarring quality, illustrating the rising of the ghouls from their graves, before morbid frivolities ensue. An enchanting, yet terrifying, Halloween masterpiece.

Mussorgsky: Night On The Bare Mountain
Another superbly fantastical narrative, Mussorgsky’s Night On The Bare Mountain is a realist piece that paints a musical pictures of a witches’ sabbath on St John’s Eve. Mussorgsky writes crude harmonies, wild, frenzied strings, bold orchestral effects, and satanic themes that Mussorgsky himself described as “barbarous and filthy”. After a night of chaos, the sunrises over Bare Mountain and the witches vanish, leaving only an eerily tranquil flute solo to end Mussorgsky’s masterpiece.

Rachmaninov: Isle Of The Dead
In this ghostly symphonic poem, one of the best pieces of classical music for Halloween, Rachmaninov creates a stunning yet desolate sonic landscape through masterful use of instrumentation and musical symbolism. Swelling lower strings, irregular surges in the 5/8 time signature and deep, shadowy brass depict oars dragging a small boat through the waters surrounding the Isle Of The Dead. The unnervingly quiet introduction is followed by a quotation of the Dies Irae (meaning ‘Day of Wrath’) plainchant, evoking a sense of hopelessness that this journey will inevitably end in a watery grave.

Schubert: Der Erlkönig
Der Erlkönig is one of Schubert’s grislier lieder. The text of Johann van Goethe’s poem tells a tale of a child and his father, pursued by a supernatural being, the Erlking. Schubert paints Goethe’s text vividly: the notoriously fiendish piano part depicts the relentless beating of horse’s hooves, whilst the voice captures increasingly frantic cries from the child and the sweet luring tones of the Erlking, who eventually claims the boy’s life.

Ravel: Gaspard de la Nuit
Ravel’s devilishly beautiful, daringly difficult, piece for solo piano is based on a set of poems and drawings by Aloysius Bertrand, where ‘Gaspard’ is a moniker for Satan. The first movement, Ondine, musically describes a water nymph’s attempts to seduce a man; the second, Le Gibet, depicts the co**se of a dead man hanging on a gibbet; and finally, Scarbo, is about an evil goblin who torments his victims with terrible tricks. In the composer’s own words: “Gaspard has been a devil in coming, but that is only logical since it was he who is the author of the poems.”
