The Man in the Red Coat

The Man in the Red Coat This is all about providing a sense of occasion and style. However, for the host it also has the benefit of removing all the stress on the day.

James is a man of many coats, red is optional. Professional Event Host, Toastmaster, Auctioneer, Voice of God and so much more (one-time wizard included). Having deep roots from an industry and arts background in commercial and customer service, gives James a distinct advantage over most of his peers when it comes to being able to adapt, not just to the audience and setting, but also the varied demands of clients.

The City of London, steeped in history and traditions.

Last month I worked in 8 City venues, and worked 6 different Livery Companies.

The venues included The Guildhall and The Mansion House.

The companies I had the pleasure of working for included , , the Marketors, The Builders Merchants, The International Bankers, and the Scriveners.

In addition to the Livery work, I carried out a wedding, a shareholder/stakeholder meeting, a corporate dinner, a book launch and helped raise almost £100,000 for charity.

I love my job.

It is great to know that some things in life don't change.

As a young boy, I used to bring my bike to be mended here as well as buy all those special things you need in life, like batteries, bulbs (both light and flower), nuts bolts and screws.

50 years later, it still looks the same and, most importantly, still smells the same.

The things you might get to see #1

The call to the reception before dinner.

"The Master requests the pleasure of your company at a reception before dinner. Please follow me upstairs and form an orderly queue as he wishes to welcome you personally.

If you are thirsty, I suggest you come now, as the drinks are THIS way!"

Thanks to all those who followed my instructions and, of course, to the fabulous carpet guard from who stood so formally guarding the stairs.

The things that you don't normally get to see. #1

Not only do I have the responsibility of fronting Livery events, but the role of the Beadle includes making sure the officers are correctly attired and ready to be presented at the correct time.

So here I am, acting as a valet to the Master, robing him, and attaching his chain of office before presenting him at court.

What you see here is a relaxed Beadle leading the Master and Wardens of the Worshipful Company of Marketors into dinner last Monday at Goldsmiths Hall.

Why am I relaxed?

Because I've got everyone in place, on time.

My thanks go to Mr Davies, all the rest of the team, and most importantly, the cadets of for providing the excellent and professional carpet guard.

Also, the catering team at for keeping the schedule and providing such a great dinner for all (including the outmess).

And finally, to the great who not only provides great pictures in some very difficult circumstances but is always great company.

Until the next time......

To create any grand event, you certain ingredients.

A planner, at least 1 "carry-outer" and a cast of, in last Friday's case, 250.

Picture number 1 shows the planner in the form of the Clerk to the Worshipful Company of Builders Merchants Jane, Lady Hilliard, and two carry-outers.

Myself, in the role of Beadle and the City Toastmaster's Toastmaster, Jamie Wallis.

Friday's installation and banquet for the new Master and Wardens was a triumph for the company and whilst the three of us would love to take all the credit we have to thank the great service of the Mansion House caterers who did a tremendous job as well as all the guests who all did as we asked.

So congratulations all around.

A fantastic evening's fundraising at Stationers' Hall in the City of London celebrating the Centenary of the Rotary Club of Paddington.

As part of their celebration, they chose to raise funds for a children's hospital in Ukraine.

A terrific evening filled with great food provided by in the wonderful surroundings of the ancient Livery Hall.

I was delighted by the result of the pledge I ran where we were able to provide medicines for 5 children for a year. (Over £25k)

Congratulations to all the organisers, and I am delighted that we were able to raise so much.

My thanks must also go to the Hall team for their cooperation and assistance, and it was great to see , , and

Another evening under my guidance and control run to the minute.

This time, the annual BPF dinner at the Royal Lancaster London.

It was wonderful to work again with a man who, like me, looked like we were advertising Ribena (other cordials are available)!

was on fire and had the whole room in stitches by cleverly making his act relevant and tailored to the plastics industry. As ever, topical, on point, and very funny.

A terrific evening, and I must commend the team at for their excellent service of all the food.

It was once again my pleasure to act as the voice of god announcer and the "get the event started on time man" at the The Payments Association Pay 360 Awards last night.

This is always a terrific event celebrating achievement, success and innovation in the world of payments and transactions.

Getting any event started on time is crucial to its success as sometimes no matter how hard you try, lost time can be impossible to get back. I am delighted to say though, that last night we once again started bang on the minute and kept everything to time all night.

Normally, when just being an announcer I do not dress as a Toastmaster. However, when numbers are high I do dress this way as it means that I stand out with more authority when asking people to do as I request.

From an announcing point of view they didn't make it easy for me giving me one quick snippet to say which included;
interoperability
increasingly
interconnected
infrastructure
minimised
volatility and
inclusivity all in 2 sentences.
This may look easy to say but mixed with other words being said quickly and clearly it is not always straightforward. Luckily I take time to mark up my scripts in advance!!

Finally, the added bonus for me last night was I got to work with another man of many voices whom I greatly admire, the wonderful Jon Culshaw. I am still now trying to get the lyrics of Only Fools and Horses sung to the tune of Nessun Dorma out my head!

A great night once again and congratulations to all the winners.

It was great working once again last night with this guy .

He did a great job in very trying circumstances queuing all the music to help choreograph a truly "remarkable" wedding.

He's a top bloke, too.

The lady seated I have much to thank for.

Way back in 2015, Sheila (the lady seated) engaged me to run the annual dinner held at Kings College Cambridge for the East Anglian Timber Trade Association.

At the end of the evening, she was so happy with how I had run the evening that she immediately booked me for the following year.

The other lady, Karen, contacted me out of the blue looking for someone to run the annual dinner for the then Timber Trade Federation (Now Timber Development UK). I asked as it was Timber related, did she know Sheila, "as she has just rebooked me to run a second dinner."

To which Karen replied, "Well, I don't need to know anymore about you because if you can work for Sheila, that is all I need to know. You're hired!"

I have worked now with both annually ever since and also work for the North West Timber Trade Association. Apparently, I am the only thing not wooden in the room!

Sheila is stepping down in the new year (allegedly). I will miss her. As for Karen I have two events already lined up between now and the end of February. Both of which I am looking forward to.
