One of the women behind which I urge you to catch before it ends this weekend at Tate Britain. There is so much to applaud in this show - the artists, the archivists for retaining all this work and the curators for putting on a show such as this. The sheer crowds say it all - it's a long overdue celebration of women's art and activism. And let's also hope it is a driving force for greater visibility and recognition. These little blooms bring such joy! I found this right outside my house this morning, fallen from the tree. It's going to be my little dose of creative inspiration for today. Blossom is such a beautiful reminder to be mindful of the seasons and of the growth that comes from all that hard work in the background of the winter months.

When I first walked down the street to my new-found friends’ flat in Mexico City, it wasn’t the pretty iron balconies or the palm trees at the end of the road that stood out most. It wasn’t feeling the warmth of friendship or excitement of a growing social life in a new city (although that felt pretty good).

It was the pink painted exterior, next to a purple house on one side and a stream of other colours alongside that made me feel warm inside.

I fell in love with Mexico’s love of colour then, and it’s been with me ever since. Colour has the ability to make you feel all sorts of emotions, and that’s why I look for rich, warm, happy colours in my photos (and pretty much every aspect of life). What’s your favourite colour?

How do you dress on a day when you’re not feeling perky? You need to be productive or enthuse but your energy is zapped. On those days in particular, I try to wear bright or bold colour. You know the ones - when you instinctively reach for dark, drab or dreary. Next time, reach for the brights. It’s a great way to shift your energy and one of the things I love most about dressing colourfully! Try it and let me know how you get on.

Who’s got some exhibition tips? I’ve been scheduling my gallery visits for the next few weeks and I’d love to hear what you’d recommend seeing. Here’s what I’m lining up: the Tate’s Women Revolt (very proud to say the film curation was advised by my good friend); the Portrait Gallery’s Julia Margaret Cameron/ Francesca Woodman Portraits to Dream in; and Expressionists, at the Tate Modern - taking me right back to my German A-Level studies, as I did my oral presentation on this movement! 🤓

Q: Which colour should you not wear to a photoshoot?

A: The colour almost all men have most of in their wardrobe! One of the first things I advise you not to wear in a photoshoot is pale blue. It is without doubt the most popular shirt colour but always the one I’ll ask you not to wear! It’s great at washing out skin tones and drawing the eye away from you (the subject). Colours that make your photos ‘pop’, even if you’re a pastels fan, will do you more favours.

I was preparing to shoot portraits for a London Assembly candidate and looking to google for inspiration on leading female MPs. Past experience should have taught me what to expect - that time I was directing a women’s charity and what I found ultimately led us to working with survivors of trafficking. But I digress. What do you think the most searched for term is when you google female MPs? Here's the top three for Female MPs...

1. ...Attractive
2. ...Legs.
3. ...Good looking

This says a lot about society and its views on women. Not to mention the safety of women MPs.

But legs don't really interest me when I cast my vote. 🤷‍♀️ I brainstormed names of inspirational female MPs instead.

So, if you’re looking for a positive, strong, inspiring, trusting image of yourself as an aspirational political candidate, think carefully before looking to google for inspiration. And consider me as your cheerleading headshot photographer.

This is what happens when you DON'T….....use personalised brand photography in your content

- Your imagery is irregular and forgettable
- Your photos are free (£!), beautiful…but look like everyone else’s images too
- You compete on price because your brand doesn’t define itself clearly
- Your old, poorly taken selfie doesn’t inspire confidence even in yourself, so you lose out on opportunities to connect with new clients

And this is what happens when you DO........

- People see your lovely face and immediately know to trust you
- They see you have a professional, well lit & styled cohesive image that doesn’t follow the crowd AND learn that you take your business seriously
- You appear likeable and trustworthy because you SHOW UP repeatedly in your content, offering opportunities for your followers to connect with you
- Your business has an individual image because yours are not stock photos, and you don’t follow the crowd

For example, a nutrition coach I’ve been working with retook her portraits and spent a day demonstrating how her services look on camera. By replacing her stock images with real life illustrations, she was able to upgrade her website, produce e-books and appear with confidence on social media, which helped her sell more programmes, develop partnerships and deliver more to her clients.
