Photography as a way to find yourself… under the laundry pile

Sometimes life turns into one long to-do list: work, kids, packed lunches, laundry, dentist appointments, and trying to remember if you actually ate today. Some call it burnout. We call it: “I’ve no idea who I am, but I’ve booked the dog in for his booster jab.”

That’s when a photoshoot isn’t a luxury — it’s a mirror. One where you’re not “Ben’s mum”, “wife of the guy in fintech”, or the unpaid family PA/chef/cleaner. You’re just you. As you are. Or as you dream to be — in jeans, in a dress, in a studio, or channeling full Marilyn. The important part? You’re in the frame.

Sometimes one good photo is enough to go: “Ah, there I am. I didn’t vanish — I just went into high-functioning survival mode.”
And just like that, the lead character returns.

When was the last time you truly saw yourself?

Tell me your photoshoot style, and I’ll tell you what kind of chaos you thrive in

Choosing a shoot location isn’t just about “what looks pretty” — it’s low-key therapy. It reveals how you rest, how you live, and how you want to be seen. Like ordering coffee — but with props, children, and more chance of someone crying.

📸 Park picnic – You’re into real life: muddy knees, biscuit crumbs, laughing mid-sprint. You’re the kind of parent who accepts grass stains as part of the memory. Your superpower? Wet wipes and optimism.

📸 Studio – You like structure. Precision. In and out. Your calendar is colour-coded and you own a label maker. And yes — the photos look chef’s kiss.

📸 Tourist hotspot stroll (think Tower Bridge, Greenwich, Big Ben) – You want drama, pride, and a touch of “yes, we do live here, thanks for asking”. It’s 30% postcard, 70% flex.

📸 At home – You’re about keeping it real. Toys on the floor? Fine. Cat photobombing? Even better. Cosy chaos is still your kind of beautiful. And yes, there’s always a spare outfit somewhere in the tumble dryer.

📸 Field of dreams (lavender, wheat, you name it) – You’re a romantic. You believe in wind direction, cinematic light, and children running in perfect slow-mo. Your visualisation skills? Olympic level. Reality? Sometimes... stubborn.

So which shoot did you go for — and does it match your inner self, or your outer chaos?

Best London spots for photos (where you won’t be chased off by security)

Doing a photoshoot in London is a bit like dating: location is everything. Except instead of butterflies, you get a man in a hi-vis vest asking if you’ve got “written permission from the council”. But don’t worry — I’ve got you covered with spots where no one cares what you’re doing, as long as you’re not blocking a Pret.

Here are a few of my secret(ish) favourites:
📍 St Katharine Docks – Same Tower Bridge vibes, none of the tourist stampede. Boats, bridges, cafés… basically Notting Hill for introverts.
📍 Greenwich Park & University – Harry Potter architecture meets sweeping city views. Also: deer. Yes, actual deer.
📍 Belgravia – Quiet, elegant streets with houses that look like they were styled by the BBC costume department.
📍 The City (on weekends) – Empty streets, grand buildings, zero chaos. Even your tripod can relax.
📍 Leadenhall Market – Arrive before 9am and it’s magical. Arrive after 10 and you’ll be photobombed by someone holding a pint and shouting about the Arsenal score.

These are my top “low-drama, high-aesthetic” locations. Got a favourite London spot where you can pose in peace?

Husbands, cameras, and that familiar sense of doom

Let’s be honest: family photoshoots are almost always initiated by women.
I’ve yet to meet a British man who wakes up on a Saturday and says, “Darling, I was thinking… we really need a lifestyle shoot in matching jumpers.” Their true superpower? Driving the car, carrying everyone’s coats, and standing around like a slightly confused prop.

If your husband is already eyeing his ‘urgent DIY project’ as an escape route — here’s the survival briefing:
🔸 It’s not for Instagram, it’s for the memories. Where he’s not just ‘The Driver’ or ‘Man Holding Coats’.
🔸 He needs to be in the photos. Otherwise, it’s just a very scenic walk with children.
🔸 These photos will be used in all future family debates: “Look, you held the balloon — you were clearly on board.”
🔸 It’s proof for your kids that Dad didn’t just work… he also smiled. Occasionally.
🔸 With the right photographer (👋 hi), it’ll be quick, painless, and no one has to file for divorce. Just follow instructions. Like IKEA furniture — but with more affection.

And what about your other half? Willingly joins in, or only moves when bribed with roast dinner and a pint?

Zodiac signs as Instagram filters: because self-discovery is cheaper than therapy

There are two types of people: those who believe in horoscopes… and those who pretend they don’t, but can list every Mercury retrograde since 2012. We went further and created a filter-based zodiac guide. Because nothing screams “this is who I am” louder than your Lightroom preset.

♈ Aries – Clarendon or anything with high contrast. Your photo is basically shouting "I’ve arrived!" Bonus points if taken on a mountain. Or at least some dramatic stairs.
♉ Ta**us – Valencia, but only after it passed an IKEA-style aesthetic audit. Warm light, flat lay, coffee mug, emotional stability.
♊ Gemini – Polaroid today, VHS tomorrow. Glitch effect by Wednesday. Every filter is a vibe and they’re all yours.
♋ Cancer – Rise filter with a dash of melancholy. Ideal shot: wrapped in a blanket, next to a candle, holding a cat. Possibly crying.
♌ Leo – Paris, Glitter, full LUX. Even if it’s just toast, it’s toast worthy of a Vogue spread.
♍ Virgo – The “no filter” filter. Technically flawless, grid-aligned, shot #12 was the winner. Background flower required.
♎ Libra – Juno or VSCO A6. Balanced light, perfect skin tone, and a sparkle in the eye — that took 45 minutes to get just right.
♏ Scorpio – B&W, heavy shadows. Eyes that pierce your soul. Nobody knows who took the photo. Possibly magic.
♐ Sagittarius – GoPro vibes or Lark filter. Your feed looks like a travel agency ad. Horses, hills, hiking boots — all accidental, all stunning.
♑ Capricorn – Gingham or full-blown Camera Raw. Neutral tones, business vibes, latte art that says “I run things.”
♒ Aquarius – VHS, glitch, experimental reels. Slightly weird, oddly brilliant. You’re not sure what it is — but it’s got 400 likes.
♓ Pisces – Soft focus, dream glow, emotionally blurry. Shot through a rainy window or a poetic existential crisis.

Recognise yourself or half your friends?

How to survive a family photoshoot (without getting divorced)

If you've booked a photoshoot with kids — congratulations! You clearly have the nerves of a Marvel-level superhero. Because a family session with small humans is basically a live-action escape room where one runs off, one cries, one takes their shoes off for no reason, and the fourth person — that’s you — is smiling through the panic with one twitching eye.

Here are five tips to stay alive and actually get some decent photos:
1️⃣ Feed everyone beforehand. A hungry child is not a model — it’s a meltdown in motion.
2️⃣ Dress for reality, not Pinterest. No itchy jumpers or tiny buttons that need a PhD to fasten.
3️⃣ Ditch the idea of “perfect behaviour”. Real life is messy — and photogenic.
4️⃣ Snacks and water. For them and you. No one glows on an empty stomach, not even mums.
5️⃣ Breathe. Yes, even during the shoot. Relaxed parents = slightly less feral children. Sometimes.

Been through one of these already? Rate your survival level: from “nailed it” to “booking solo spa weekend now”.

Why your personal brand (and showing up online) actually matters

Ever noticed how someone disappears from your feed — and p**f! Gone from your memory too? Not because you're heartless, but because the human brain is basically a busy receptionist. It only keeps files on people who show up regularly. And let’s be honest — sometimes we forget names quicker than we forget our Tesco Clubcard.

Meanwhile, someone else pops up every now and then — a photo from a walk, a coffee with a toddler, a quick work update or just a brilliant cat-on-laptop moment. And suddenly you know their pet’s name, where they went on holiday, and how they take their eggs. So when you meet in real life, it’s oddly familiar — no small talk needed, no awkward pauses. Just connection. That’s half the job done.

So, real question: how much do you trust the people you see more often online? And have you ever wondered — could someone feel the same way about you?

This was one of my very first weddings of the year — shot in January, a month traditionally known in Britain as “why did I leave the house again?” season.
Cold? Yes. Windy? Also yes. But look at this bride — glowing in a sparkly gown and fluffy shrug like the queen of January herself.

The wedding was small and intimate, exactly the kind of celebration I absolutely adore photographing. No stress, no 200-person guest lists, no awkward speeches from “that one uncle.” Just love, family, and a couple who look like they stepped straight out of a Richard Curtis movie (in the best way possible).

And yes, they did go outside for a few portraits. Because when you’re wearing a snow-white furry jacket in front of a Georgian façade, it would be rude not to.

Sometimes work is just work.
And sometimes you’re standing on Westminster Bridge at 7am, photographing a group of friends who’ve flown all the way from Mexico... to run a marathon. Not for the tea. Not for the Big Ben selfies. Not even for the M&S meal deals.
No — to run. On purpose.

This crew came in all shapes, ages, and marathon mileage. For some, it was their first. For others — just another tick on the global running bucket list. Apparently, there are people whose actual hobby is running marathons in different cities. And honestly? Massive respect. That kind of dedication deserves a medal before the race even starts.

For all of them, it was their first London Marathon.
For me? Just another reminder of why I love my job. I get to meet people like this — people with stories, with goals, with that fire in their eyes (and compression socks on their legs).

If you’re seeing these photos — it means they’ve already done it.
And I really hope they didn’t just survive the marathon — I hope they enjoyed the hell out of it.

I used to believe that looking elegant was simple: just make your entire wardrobe black.
And for years, I really did. I had what you might call my "coal phase" — endless rails of black clothes. Black makes you look slimmer, sharper, more grown-up. It’s safe. It always works. Even if you’ve only had coffee for lunch and your hair’s doing something political — throw on black, and boom, you’re ‘intentional.’

But over time, I realised black doesn’t just hide your body — it hides your energy, too. It’s a colour that protects, yes, but also one that mutes. It doesn’t exactly scream joy or I’m thriving, thanks. It’s giving: stylish woman on the verge.

These days, I barely have any black clothes left. Maybe one pair of trousers — for job situations where I’m expected to look “normal” and not like I’ve wandered out of a Wes Anderson film. My wardrobe naturally shifted towards lighter, softer, more pastel tones.
And yes, I go through colour eras — last year it was lilac, this year I’m living in beige and pretending it’s a lifestyle choice, not a sign of emotional stability.

And honestly? Colour changes everything. You put on something bright, and suddenly you’re not apologising for taking up space. Red says “watch me”, yellow says “I’m sunshine with opinions”. Colour lifts you. Even if the weather doesn’t.

And let’s not forget the men. Bless them. They won’t notice your perfectly balanced silhouette or that your top is from that capsule edit. But they will notice when you’re glowing — and somehow, colour does that. No one ever fell in love with a woman because her outfit whispered mourning but make it fashion.
