Our Story

Over the weekend of the 3,4 and 5 June 2017, in grounds of the Pippingford Estate, Byline is planning the first ever open festival of independent journalism. BylineFest will be open to the public, and with special discounts for students and journalists, tapping into the great democratising potential of investigative and open source journalism, from hyperlocals to podcasts, guerrilla documentary making and crowd funded publishing. Ultimately, we seek to do for independent journalism what the Sundance Festival has done for independent producers, creating an annual event to connect pioneers in different fields to a public hungry for honest, accountable and adventurous reporting. The weekend will also be an adventure in itself. Taking advantage of our woodland location, we will collaborate with artists and set designers to create a colourful, multimedia event more akin to a music festival than the interior of a university auditorium. Beyond four main tents dedicated to two full days of talks and events, there will be a main stage for comedy, DJs, music and film screenings in the evenings. In the surrounding woodland visitors will be able to stumble across discussion groups, workshops, cafes and bars and even immersive theatre events connected to live issues in news and current affairs. This will not only be a celebration of journalism and campaigning during the day, but a carnival for the senses in the night. The main focus of this first BylineFest will be on what is broken in journalism (concentrated ownership, click bait desperation, Post Truth propaganda) and the myriad ways this is being fixed by individuals in new sites, publications, podcasts or indy documentaries. In the spirit of subversion, we’ll also aim to create some dramatic narratives and break some news over the weekend. The festive will feature prominent comedians and performers commenting on the state of media and politics. We plan to keep them on their toes. The festival will conclude in this disruptive vein with the inaugural BAD PRESS AWARDS for the most inaccurate headline, fact free articles, odious columns and obvious sponsored content in the previous year, hosted by one of our special guests with nominations and short lists leading up to the final. BylineFest should be an event without precedent, shaking up the world of media, allowing you to connect with new audiences, partners, talent and ideas – and to have a magical and memorable weekend at the same time
