Based in the heart of the City, ideally positioned just 5 minutes walk from Bank and Liverpool Street stations and close to many other transport links, is the City of London Club. According to its first members, the Club offered ‘a Place of Useful Resort’ to those of ‘known respectability’ in the City. Since 1832, important City figures such as the first Duke of Wellington, Sir Robert Peel and the

original Rothschild family have used the Club to relax in good company and comfortable, elegant surroundings. Our impressive heritage is matched by our excellent range of facilities. We provide everything you would expect for modern events, conferences and meetings in the most elegant setting you will find in the City and you are not required to be a member to book. Our event spaces can accommodate groups of all sizes, from a small business meeting for 2, dinner up to 100 and up to 300 people for a drinks reception, intimate wedding reception and bedrooms.

Our newly reinstated Drawing Room is a magnificent space for Members to relax, read or simply enjoy a cup of coffee near the fireplace. Newspapers are available daily and Members are welcome to take drinks and coffee there after lunch.

Members and guests are invited to our inaugural Racing Dinner on Wednesday 29th March with Dr Richard Newland. Dr Newland is a former GP, now established as one of Britain’s leading racehorse trainers. Richard’s interest in national hunt racing led him to become an owner which in turn led to him establishing his own unique training yard at Elmbridge in Worcestershire. Richard’s innovative approach to training has produced outstanding results including winners at the Cheltenham Festival and the 2014 Grand National with Pineau de Re. We would like to infom Members that Salisbury Room is almost ready to reopen. This room will be offering a limited choice, two or three course lunch, with emphasis on speed in dining and a more relaxed dress code 🥂🍽

Our main clock located at the middle of the stairs has a thermometer and barometer incorporated which was made by L. Cassella’s company for the City of London Club.

This company became scientific instrument makers to the Admiralty and Government of North America in 1856, and to the East India Company and the Board of Trade in 1860 positioning at the zenith of meteorological instruments making during the Victorian period.

L. Cassella is one of the few companies of this period that still remains in existence today, it continued to provide meteorological instruments throughout much of the 20th Century but the focus of the business has since diversified into environmental sampling and monitoring products

Amongst the original Members of the Club in 1832, were two men whose names are landmarks in the history of this country, the Duke of Wellington and Sir Robert Peel, both of whom remained Members until they died in 1852 and 1850 respectively. Other original Members were the Marquess of Salisbury, father of the famous statesmen, also Lord Overstone, a great figure in the city of his time; and three of the Rothschild family, one of whom, Baron Nathaniel Meyer de Rothschild, was the founder of Rothschild House in London.

The Club is pleased to announce that the smaller side of the Upper Smoking Room has been transformed into a private dining room capable of sitting up to 26 people for intimate and private breakfasts, lunches, and dinners on a newly acquired 24ft mahogany table. 🍽️
The pantry has been refurbished to enable Chef and his brigade to produce the expected quality and standard of food in this new private room.

Take a step back into our history! On Wednesday 29th February 1832 the City of London Club was formed at the George and Vulture Tavern. John Masterman Esqre. was in the Chair and remained Chairman for 26 years until 1858. At the time the Club was formed he worked for and became a director of Masterman, Peters, Mildred and Company who were London bankers. In 1841 he was elected as one of four Members of Parliament for the City of London and held the seat until 1857 when he stood down from the House of Commons. Here is a clip of The Derek Nash Acoustic Quartet who entertained the Members and guests at last night’s Jazz evening. It was a great night although it would have been better if more members had supported the night. It is hoped to host the 3rd annual jazz evening next year!

Today was the Members' Christmas lunch. It was a very busy but enjoyable day. It is wonderful to see some of our Members singing along with the choir from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama who sang beautifully for our Members. Merry Christmas to one and all!
