Grand Union Folk Club

Grand Union Folk Club Grand Union is a traditional style folk club that meets on most Monday nights in the Horse & Trumpet Why not come and join us? N.B. Guest night charges vary.

Grand Union is a traditional style folk club that meets on Monday nights in the friendly setting of a village pub serving a range of real ales. A place to sit back, relax and lose yourself for a few hours in the company of like minded people with a love of traditional music. "Great singing club" The Wilson Family. The Horse & Trumpet is a lovely CAMRA listed pub, located in Sileby, Leicestershire.

It is traditional in style with lots of nooks and crannies and some great beers. Clive, the landlord has made the club feel very welcome. The pub is one of a small, extremely well kept group of hostelries owned by the Steamin‘ Billy Brewing Co.. The Horse & Trumpet's car park is fairly small; check the map for alternative parking. Singarounds and Guest Nights

Singarounds and guest nights start at 8.00pm (Doors open at 7:30). Singarounds are the very essence of what the club is about and are on the 2nd Monday of each month throughout the year (check the website for the January date if the 2nd Monday is Plough Monday). Normally there is no formal entry charge, but a voluntary contribution of just £1 to help us offset our running costs would be most welcome. Traditional Music Sessions

The music sessions are open to any musician who enjoys playing folk music. While the music tends to have a bias towards the tradition the format is reasonably free and the actual tunes played on any given night are collectively determined by those taking part. The sessions start at 8.00pm, there is no entrance fee and the pub keeps a good cellar with real ales always available. So what are you waiting for? Come and join us. Please note that the monthly English Music workshops that the club used to run ceased in September 2021. Core Members

The Grand Union Folk Club has at its core a group of well established singers and musicians who are drawn together by a common passion - the love of a good session. Even allowing for the occasional absentee, there are enough of us to guarantee that, if you enjoy tradition style acoustic folk music, you will have a great evening out. Getting Here / Sileby

Sileby is a former industrial village and civil parish in the Soar Valley in Leicestershire, between Leicester and Loughborough. Nearby villages include Barrow upon Soar, Mountsorrel, Ratcliffe-on-the-Wreake, Seagrave and Cossington. The village has a railway station on the Ivanhoe Line, and trains run hourly to Leicester, Loughborough, Nottingham and Lincoln.[6]

There are two bus links to various neighbouring villages, as well as to Loughborough (Roberts no. 27 and Kinchbus no. 2) and Leicester (Kinchbus no. 2). This network also includes links to the "Skylink" to East Midlands Airport which is about 15 miles away. The village has excellent links to major road transport networks via the nearby A6 and A46 linking directly to the M1 which lies to the west. The A46 will take you to Lincoln in the north and ultimately provides a link to the east coast of England. The Horse & Trumpet has a fairly small car park but there are alternative parking spaces within two minutes walking distance of the pub (see map below). There is a limited amount of parking in front of the shops on both King Street and High Street. However your best bet is to park on the public car park behind the shops.

With voices, concertina and melodeon, they offer a delightful repertoire of unusual songs and tunes, and their comfortable and relaxed style of presentation makes the perfect setting for their commitment to the material and their consummate musicianship. Dave is the English Concertina specialist, while Ian plays the two-row melodeon.

The Grand Union Folk Club will be meeting on Monday 28th October for an evening with the Dan McKinnon, supported Ruth King.

We meet at the The Horse & Trumpet in Sileby (LE12 7LP). Doors open at 7.30pm for an 8.00 start. Admission is £8.00 for members, £10.00 for non-members.

Dan McKinnon is a singer with a superbly rich, mellow, baritone voice; an excellent guitarist with an ear for the “right” accompaniment and a songwriter who doesn’t just pen lyrics, he tells stories and delivers them with a clear enunciation that makes them easy to follow. He hails from the maritime community of Halifax, Nova Scotia so, it's not surprisingly that his early in his career was influenced by the late, great Stan Rogers. Dan's musical style owes much to Stan and he pays homage by singing some of Stan's songs. However he is not a Stan Rogers tribute act. Dan’s repertoire is a rich blend of self-penned numbers, songs from other contemporary sources and an array of traditional material. He has been performing for more than 40 years and has embrace the lifestyle of the archetypal troubadour, based in Canada but regularly touring in the USA, Australia and the UK. He has a very strong fan base over here. People are drawn in by his great music, winning smile and a warm disposition that makes you feel that you are in the company of a friend. Come and see him and by the end of the evening you will be joining his fan club.
“You can hear from the moment he steps out in front of an audience that he’s one of the most engaging and genuine performers on the scene … blessed with a gorgeous baritone voice, and an exceptional command of phrasing
